A "fanatic", mostly brings the "otaku", to mind. A regular fan, such as myself, can love anime so much in this world... as I do, and nobody would say anything. ^_^ Now otakus, are a different story that I won't get into. D:

An "otaku" is a fanatic, not necessarily anime fanatic, but a fanatic of something, be it cooking, internet, anime/manga, or something else. I won't "declare" myself as an anime otaku, since I'm not that obsessed with anime, but I'll admit that I have some otaku quality in me ;) But I think I'm really close to being an internet otaku though... O_O |

well...if they are really 'into' it...but they are absolutely not a freak!!(i'm into so much of the anime too) what could really interests me was anime and the only thing i can talk for most of the time also anime...(i wouldnt care how people thinks about me...in fact being a weirdo or otaku isnt something i feel embarrassed about... and i know a librarian..she's more more into the anime(especially bleach) till she likes to cosplay her...(i mean rukia) lol~anyway...i wouldnt feel any weird about her... So don't say anime fanatics are weird...(T_T) cause for me...those people that watch anime are really kind... |

I don't see why we should be labeled as weird. I mean, what can we do about it? It's just plain that we love the whole Anime culture just like how other people are very passionate about other things; what's so wrong or disgusting about that? Look at football fanatics; some of them gather into riots after games and actually go out and wreak havoc on the streets. People get hurt or even die because of their actions, and they're not labeled as weird. I have good reason to believe that everyone here in this forum, and every other otaku in the world is a kind and quite sociable person at the very least, and would most likely not end up in some sort of Anime riot (Although that would seem quite interesting, hahaha!!! ^^) Anyway, my point is, we're just people who absolutely LOVE anime. And no one can do a thing about it dammit!!! Long live anime!! ^^   |

I think this sort of understanding and differentiation regarding the question why do SOME anime fans are considered weird will come with age. And I mean that in the most non-insulting way possible. It depends on the extent and context as well. Merely watching a lot of anime and being a fan of it is okay and people may or may not understand it. Cosplay and the weird kids at anime conventions is a different thing altogether. We all know them, we've all seen them. I'm not denouncing ALL of cosplay, just ... you know which. There's also an association in most people's minds based on ignorance: anime = cartoons = for kids. From that perspective, how can teens still watch cartoons, they wonder. The same mentality gets parents in trouble with their kids and video games. They still associate videogames with Mario and the like and have mostly no regard for the rating system. It will be a while until people will realize there's shades even to anime. Winnie the Pooh is one thing. Ghost in the Shell something else altogether. Sorry to say this, but most anime fanatics I've come across classified as "weird" quite comfortably. They are also extremely boring people to talk to. They sleep, eat, screw anime and little else besides it.

| sure people who would DO ANYTHING for their hobby might be considered wierd but for them its pretty normal so im ok with that as long as no gets hurt and they follow the LAW hahaha |

I am an Otaku but am not weird...on a scale of weirdness from 1 to 1O, i'll say i got 5 points. everybody including those who dislike Anime/manga is weird in her/his own way. and i would say that those who hate Anime/manga are actually the weirdos as they could not appreciate the arts behind it... Good point Lain. Who determines what is weird? Some people have little imagination. Anime doesn't make sense to them. Just like an artist needs imagination to draw or paint, someone without much imagination won't get any enjoyment out of anime I guess. It is their loss! Maybe they have more fun watching Jerry Springer or Judge Judy.  |
