@Doraemon:

I don't agree that the country is being run by the clergy. Public ratings serve a real purpose, and are not solely a by product of the church goers' influence. But thats another thread!

You hit the nail on the head, though. The bottom line is human rights. It is truly a contradiction to say you don't discriminate on the basis of sex, while shunning at gay marriage. In the context of history, this is just another social hurtle we will overcome, like slavery and women's rights.

Did people with black skin and women with equal rights ruin society? I don't think so.
Will gay people take over and ruin society for the strait upper class church going white man? No, not likely.

This is not a civil rights issue at all. This is about gays wanting to redefine the ancient institution of marriage to suit their own purposes.

And what purposes are those?

I'm not sure. Rather than pressing for civil unions with the same legal standing as a marriage (which I don't think the vast majority of Americans would have cared about) they have insisted upon trying to redefine marriage. I think this was a stupid decision on their part, as it needlessly antagonizes a huge number of people and basically gains them nothing.

I agree oldcrow that's why I said they should just name it something else, it gets around all of that.

Crow, I still think this is a civil rights issue. I think gays may be afraid that civil unions would be considered "separate but equal" unions. This would be okay if we didn't already know that "separate but equal" in the eyes of the law is not equal. I wish I knew someone that was gay so I could ask their thoughts on the matter.

Let me get back on my sopa box again. I haven't been on the sit for a while so let's start back with one of my first posts. Gay people want the civil rights that come with marriages. They are afraid if they try and change the name that the government would also change some of the benefits. If you don't believe me talk to my gay friends. I'm comfortable enough to hang around them as they are just like the rest of us. Also, it's bad that these people keep talking about how sacred marriage is and how religious it is when we still have drive-thru marriage booths in California. It sickens me how the whole "marriage is sacred" issue isn't real big until gay people want to marry. What about Brittney Spears? She had a "religious" marriage when she should not have. What it comes down to is, we will never get rid of the "ism". What I mean is sexism, racism, ageism, and so on. These types of hate will always show up as much of America, and some of this world just doesn't accept differences. They want everyone to be like them, if not then those people are wrong. People just aren't open-minded. Some people are just shut in their own little world and don't want to accept that other people are different. Now I say some people, there are still a few that open-minded, just the majority is not. This is probably why gay marriage is still not passed here. Also if you read some of the posts below you meet some of the people. The ones saying "Gay people are nasty." and "They shouldn't marry bcause I'm a christian." Well how does you having to be a christian affect them? Why do thy have to listen to you? Believe me weddings lost their religious qualities a long time ago. They also lost a lot of their meanings and values. Some people uphold these valus and I salute them. As a whole though marriage is a mockery and we shouldn't shun people that want to do it for the right reasons and praise people that do it for the wrong reasons. Ok it's late and I'm tired, if I can think of more I will get back to you guys.

don't get me started on Gay Marriage and Gay rights, i'm doing the laramie project play right now, if you don't know what it is, i think it was HBO who made a great movie based on this script, rent it from BB or something.

I think there should be no objections towards gays and lesbians, its a lifestyle, like being vegetarian. Would you condemn a vegetarian? why would you then condemn gays? Although i'm not gay, I would actually be complimented if a gay man came on to me, they have high standards.

I'll eat you.

as a lesbian i have been in this debate many times.
and if you observe, there is almost always one person who says they dont mind homosexuals except gay men.
when it comes to marriage issues, the government is almost mad eup with these people who think girls are ok but not guys,
if gay marriage became legal for women and not men, i would refuse to accept it until it was equal for both women and men gay or not, i dont want to be given a preference becaue of my sex, im in the same position and i am no better than a gay man but if i get priority over them becuse im female then that shows the people in this world who are corrupt. i say either let marriage be for everyone or for no-one.
thats all i have to say
