Billions. Learning Japanese through anime is horrible. The language is so much more than "Dattebayo!" and "IMMAEATCHUUP-jutsu". The best way to learn is finding a japanese teacher, one of native ethnicity.

aarrgghh! I agree with the last guy. Those who think you can learn Japanese by watching anime just have waaaaay too much free time. (笑)

I've learned what Japanese I know by taking it in community college (which I'm still doing). Occasionally I'll watch an anime in 日本語, but it just supplements what I've learned. Anyone can bit up a bit of Japanese from anime, but you'll never be fluent that wayね.

I've picked up lots of keywords from anime and song lyrics. It can be helpful for understanding, and getting the accent right, but I never know how to use it for myself, just understand from the key words.

So, I started taking Japanese class a couple weeks ago. Anime has helped give me a bit of an advantage, but its no replacement.

I have seen quite many anime, about 30+
I can just say or understand basics of Japanese, also just by watching anime!
Sometime finding japanese songs lyrics also can help,
but you just know how to see japan words,
but the meaning...i just don't know..

you can only learn basic japanese when watching animes... but you won't learn keigo for that... you can but there are some "rules" to be followed or whatsoever.. besides.. you won't understand some kotowaza just by learning it from anime, though animes/manga are big help, you can learn many vocabularies... but sentences patterns are hard so its not applicable if you're just learning it from watching.. ^^

though I passed JLPT 3kyuu by just watching almost 100+animes

Too many. Unless you focus on the subtitles. Lyrics help sometimes.

i think its just easier to watch anime as something to motivate u to learn the language cuz u cant do anything if ur not motivated to do so. theres nothin wrong with picking up words from anime just dont try to pass it off as actually knowing the language. i can guarentee an EPIC FAIL

I've watched only a few anime series, and I don't know much Japanese.
One of the things I remember is "Purasu! Purasu! Dakedo mianasu!"
Or something like that. It's from the Pre-Parade, Toradora!'s
opening song for the first season. (I guess you can call it that.)

Uhmm not to be rude or something but,
Learning japanese from anime is impossible. its like you have 1% chances of getting fluent here.
Japanese people dont talk like what is in Anime,
And They definetly dont want as to learn from there animation.

here's a better explanation why:

I use anime as reference but it's like at top 99 over 100
If you wanna learn, you can find japanese friends who wants to learn your language.
then he/she will teach you their language.

Ahehe no problem,
well, if you are studying japanese so you could get rid of the Subtitles, you can learn from anime,
But take note: DONT EVER SPEAK LIKE IN ANIME when in contact with a real japanese person. trust me ^_~

If you know what good anime to learn it from.
but then again by the time you know that you would probably know a certain level of japanese. as for me I also watch a japanese channel, "NHK world" to be precise. they air a bunch of documentaries and stuff both in English and japanese though some shows doesn't have English versions or the other way around. I also watch news there from time to time. they did had a bunch of japanese learning shows before they stop airing them for some reason.

It doesn't take that much anime at all to learn Japanese; however, the most you would probably pick up would be a few phrases and plenty of vocabulary. Getting used to hearing the language is a plus as well, but that doesn't help you quite as much.

Anyway, to repeat/paraphrase what others have said before me, do not try to learn from anime (or tokusatsu or dramas, for that matter) if you seek fluency. It's extremely unlikely that one can pick up grammatical structures from watching anime/toku/dramas alone, and grammar is a very important part of any language.

For grammar, I suggest the book Japanese the Manga Way, by Wayne P. Lammers. This can help you understand grammatical structures and help you pick up some vocabulary along the way, but not many things can beat a course in Japanese. (To digress for a moment, the book is interesting and gives very good explanations on when to use particles and the differences in formality among other things, but unfortunately, I can't learn well from reading books alone. :/)

I do have what might be a "cheaper" suggestion though: join a fansub group. While there's the technical aspect of subbing the episode, I think you could learn a lot from the group, especially from the translator, or if he/she is fluent, the QCer. (QC = quality control) In some groups with forums, the QCer will post a list of possible errors including, if he/she is fluent, translation errors. Not that it would be that much more helpful than simply watching a subbed episdoe, but perhaps you can learn why a word/phrase is translated in a certain way because you would be more involved in the process.
(And this is my 20 yen* that doesn't repeat what other people have said and suggested previously.)

-Draiken Talkos

*Not an exact equivalence to two U.S. cents, but for the sake of simplicity, please don't berate me for this. XD

PS: While I'm on the topic of fansubbing and in the case you take up my suggestion, don't worry if you can't do any of the technical tasks. While experience is often a plus for groups, many, many, many of them are very kind and will give you help, tips, and/or tutorials to give you some basic training on one of the many tasks in fansubbing so you can participate and help out. :)

I'm on 500 series right now. I can watch most anime raw, unless it's an exposition heavy mystery series or a historical piece (but even then I can follow a lot of what they're saying) - but having subs is still more comfortable, albeit limiting. I'm not sure how much of this is because of the anime, though - I've been translating lyrics for a while using two dictionaries (an online romanji one and a kanji one) and the basic auditory 'sense' I got from watching anime. Two years ago these translations were shite (heck, even a year ago), but now I'm pretty comfortable... though still using a dictionary.

I'm nowhere near fluency, though.

But it's not true that you can't learn a foreign language from TV and whoever suggested classes is an idiot.

Ok, since this sounds inflammatory (I'm sorry, it wasn't intended that way) and I need some proof to back up what I'm saying: I learned German watching dubbed anime as a kid and now I have a diploma to show that I'm fluent (on C1 level). I went to a German highschool, with all subject in German, and my language skills actually deteriorated in those four years (I have old stories, essays and note-books where I use expressions I can't anymore). I learned English initially from watching enough cartoons to be capable of understanding most words in a text, and then read tons and tons of fanfiction for six months. I've always been ahead of my class in English, so much that the teachers never did more than pat me on the head and give me a high grade.

The only way you can learn a language is by completely immersing yourself in it. The quickest way is to move to Japan; failing that, you have to move Japan to you: cultural articles, anime, music, movies, texts that have furigana, someone to talk to - and ignore all other foreign languages while you do this.

HOWEVER- it's true that you can't learn anything from /subbed/ anime. It's not 'immersion' because it has an english translation and your brain learns to substitute the foreign sounds with the english words. Unless you watch it raw, and frankly, unless you're younger than 13 (or whatever the cutoff age for sponge-brain childhood is) - it's useless.
