What do you mean the first time one learns a language? As opposed to what, relearning it a fourth or fifth time?
Maka here is an wonderful example of why it's a bad idea to home school your children.
Maybe also a good example of why inbreeding is a bad idea, although the paternity test has not been done to say for sure.

Challenged. - The characters, then the grammar, everything. Very different. Excited. - I got a big kick out of quizzing myself. Proud. - My friends would ask me to translate their manga or ask me for some trivia (even when I can't be bothered to watch the show). Japan changed that. I consciously kicked out typically weaboo habits (by staying away from anime and fandom the entire stay, joining a church group, and moonlighting), and these initial feelings gave way to: Resigned awe. - The more I learn, the more I realize the impracticality and the sheer impossibility of mastering the language, especially if it no longer has any prospect of practical use for it besides my hobbies. I no longer hit the books, etc. Somewhat unsettled. - My friends still ask me to translate stuff, but now I just quote other people or point them to the Internet, or when I do it myself, I put a BIG disclaimer. I now find it extremely difficult asking native Japanese for language help knowing that it's for a mere hobby. Relaxed. - I now get by with the little I know, and learn while simply browsing or looking up stuff. I'm definitely not tired of the language though, I still love it as when I first encountered it. |
