Haha, just like my tomodachi Jared haha. I feel my English is getting better as if it were my first language. |

Not really, his girlfriend is Japanese and so are her friends so naturally if you have been around them, you will pick up the language. |
|
Re: do you like to speak japanese??

| I am not saying you wouldn't pick up another language by being around it. But I am saying that your dominant language probably won't change, unless you use significantly less of your dominant language for quite a few years. |

Yes, I understand that, because that is your first language. I understand because sometimes I add Japanese to the English sentence haha. |

I think Korean is more fun to speak than Japanese, but I like to speak both. I usually speak a mix of both around people who understand them. And when people use "jap" to shorten the word "japanese" to speak about the language on a forum... they are just saying it because it is easier to type. There is no reason to be offended, and it has no relation to the offensive racial slur. So I don't know why people are complaining... it's like you WANT to be offended or something O_o; And learning Japanese on the internet is really hard, especially because a lot of things will throw you off, especially anime kids and anime. If you want to learn, I would suggest taking a class at a university, or buying a few textbooks and studying them intently. |

You got to understand that it is rude to say "jap" because you are not using the formal word. Japanese has two forms of saying things. Formal and Casual. The word jap is a casual term and it does not show respect towards the Japanese people. |

Re: do you like to speak japanese??

i agree that saying "jap" instead of "japanese" is kinda like a disgrace towards japanese. i'd say among people who uses this abbeviation, some don't realise the degree of its seriousness. it's like, for instance, A said something which he thinks there's nothing truly offensive according to his perspectives of life, but the same words offended B who has different way of thinking as A. same goes for the usage of "jap", many people are not into japanese culture, thus they feel it's OK to use that. i don't know.

Yes, shiroyuu is what I'm trying to say. I feel offended when some calls me Jap. I'm Japanese. Please call me that. It's formal and it shows respect. I will show the same respect to everyone else. |

Just wondering if you don't mind being referred to as JP in shorthand, since that's what I've picked up over online games and such when i interacted with Japanese players. Regarding the word "Jap", it's an old term used during WWII, I believe, as a racial slur. Most people don't know that, so I'm hoping most Japanese can understand the fact that the term is so old most people don't even know it anymore, despite it only being about half a century old. Chinese is my first language, and English is my second, so naturally when I was prompted to select a third language upon entering high school, I selected Japanese, because of how easy it would be for me (Grammar structure in most Asian languages are the same, not to mention that Japanese words, kanji, etc are heavily based off Chinese). Unfortunately, the level at which America teaches your second/third language is abyssmal - I think this is lended from the fact that America is big-headed about being the most powerful country in the world, and apparently English is the best language to them (Though one must admit it's the current international language). |

Re: do you like to speak japanese??

That is why I feel a bit offended if one calls me Jap, because that was being called when wwII happened. JP is acceptable because it can be used as initials. I'm glad today Japan and America are in good terms. I really like America and as much as Japan. English was really hard for me, but now I'm real good at it. It's great doing business with the U.S. that is why English has to be learn. I think the same can be said with Japanese. |

Re: do you like to speak japanese??

I am sure that the ignorance plays the game about the term. I mostly let it go, but maybe I should start point it out ("educating" people), if it's used unintensionally. It does create a little bit of interesting dilemma because us Japanese tend to know this word being insult, regardless of age, but the same can't be said about Americans. But it's something you want to be careful, if you want to make a good impression to Japanese people. I don't think there's any problem using short hand JP in its replacement, but that only works on the internet. |

Hey, if you feel like correcting someone about using the term, go ahead. Most people will gladly oblige you, because like it was said, they just aren't aware of the hurtful connotations of the word. Also, way to derail the subject marei. :D Welcome to the boards!

You got to understand that it is rude to say "jap" because you are not using the formal word. Japanese has two forms of saying things. Formal and Casual. The word jap is a casual term and it does not show respect towards the Japanese people. Ummm... people are using it to refer to the LANGUAGE, not PEOPLE. They're using it in a completely different sense. And um, we're speaking English, not Japanese... In Japanese they do not use the words "Japanese" and "Jap" to describe the language... those are ENGLISH words... And no I'm not saying that Japanese people do not know what "Japanese" means, I'm just saying that we are speaking English... and people only used "jap." to shorten the word referring to the language, and it's obvious they were both only shortening the word because it was the internet and they were talking about the language. If it was speech and not typing, they would not have said "jap" so there is no reason to correct them, because the offense you are going on about is completely unrelated to what they actually said. |

@metapod But it still doesn't take away the fact that people can be offended, whether taken in context or not. Online, offline, it doesn't matter. Would you appreciate someone saying 'jap' all over the place? ![]() ![]() |

> Ummm... people are using it to refer to the LANGUAGE, not PEOPLE. > They're using it in a completely different sense. True, but that doesn't mean that the word can be still considered inconsiderate, or taboo, even. In a very extreme example, if I tell some one, "f*ck you," I am referring to a person, but if I say, "This is f*cked up," I am just describing something, not some one. It still dones't make it ok for me to say it everywhere. > And um, we're speaking English, not Japanese... In Japanese they do > not use the words "Japanese" and "Jap" to describe the language... > those are ENGLISH words... In Japan, they often have foreign characters in stories (such as manga) say "jap (ジャップ)" to insult a Japanese person, so many are very aware of the insult that the word carries. That would mean that this word isn't just English anymore. And regardless of how you, as non-Japanese, may think, Japanese people may very well be offended by it, regardless of the actual non-offensive intension. > And no I'm not saying that Japanese people do not know what "Japanese" > means, I'm just saying that we are speaking English... and people only > used "jap." to shorten the word referring to the language, and it's > obvious they were both only shortening the word because it was the > internet and they were talking about the language. I don't agree with this completely. I think people take internet communication for granted. It's still people interacting with people, so I think the same respect should be used as if you were speaking in person. Yes, I know that people mean no offense the most of time when this word appears. I also know that many Japanese may not particularly care (especially those living in the States). But really, would it be so hard to type the whole word, when you type the word, "English," without shortening it? |
