"You are doing the right thing" Mayumi replied when Kyousuke had replaced his shirt and turned back to face her; explaining the elder's reasons for hurting him. "They are jealous because it was you who thought of the noble idea of leaving the throne to Remiel." She spoke softly letting herself sit on a chair that was big enough to fit the two teenagers. She motioned for him to sit down next to her. "What they don't know is that, you may have saved their lives in the long run, and you are much wiser than your age makes it seem." |

I sighed, sitting next to her. I wanted desperately to lay back and take the weight off my feet; but when I tried, a sharp, hot pain ripped up through my back and I had to lean forward again. I rested my head in my hands, taking in Mayuki's delicate words and carefully examining them. Yes, she was right. They were jealous because I was too intelligent. That sounded like Nobles; especially High Nobles. I nodded in understanding, "I could believe that. I've had so many study sessions crammed into my head that I could definately rival my Father before his death. There's so much to know, and I realize I haven't learned it all yet.... But, they're forcing me into all this when I'd rather learn it on my own." I paused then. "I didn't think about it like that, initially, Mayumi. You're very intelligent, yourself." |

Mayumi blushed and giggled, "Why thank you Kyouske..." She was quiet for a moment her eyes intent on Kyousuke she smiled at him and sighed a happy sigh, "you know your eyes are a portal to your soul, and they're doing something I've never seen before. One is wide showing affection, happynes..." she trailed off and her voice got quiet, "maybe even love." She smiled again, "the other is narrow with stress, and pain..." She stood up and let a cool hand slid on his back, "this is more painful than you are letting me know... Kyousuke, you can't even lean back without it hurting can you..." She smiled again and let her hand rest ontop of his, "don't lie, you don't have to act like an iron man around me... I will always like you for who you are." She whispered and sat down next to him allowing the formalities to melt away once and for all. "Lets talk about happy memories, and deal with the rest of the world later..." |

--------------------------------- :k y o u s u k e: I looked up at her slightly, through my fingers. The comment about my eyes... what did that mean? I wasn't exactly certain, though I did know that affection, happiness, stress, and pain were all things I was truly feeling at the moment; predominant emotions that had taken root in my very being since I had moved into the palace. When the idea came up of reminiscing about the days at the Kohaku Manor came up, I couldn't have welcomed it more thoroughly. I stood offering my arm to Mayumi politely. "Accompany me on a tour of my palace, then, milady?" I smiled playfully at her, forcing myself to forget my studies today, and the growing pile of letters from other lords of Solantra. "We can go down to the gardens, if you'd like. I have this fountain that looks exactly like the one that I used to make mud in for mud pies, and fill with frogs and worms. Remember when Farah was sitting on the edge and I put one of the frogs in her lap? I was about seven then... you would have been five. She nearly had a heart attack! I think she was appalled more about the fact that I was running around in the fountain naked, when I knew better, than the fact that there was a frog on her fine silk! That poor woman, I feel so bad for her now that I'm a little more mature." I paused to think about that statement for a moment, then shook my head. "No I don't; I don't regret a damned thing I did to that woman!" |

Kyousuke looked up at her though his fingers as if thinking about what she had just told him. Again she watched as his eyes softened and it made her happy to know she had a calming affect on him, if nothing else. Suddenly he stood up and offered her his arm like a true gentleman. "Accompany me on a tour of my palace, then, milady?" He asked sweetly, smiling at her with a playful glint in his eyes. A smile that made Mayumi feel all warm inside. She smiled at him and hooked her arm with his taking her place by his side and allowing him to easily guide her around the palace. "We can go down to the gardens, if you'd like. I think she was appalled more about the fact that I was running around in the fountain naked, when I knew better, than the fact that there was a frog on her fine silk! That poor woman, I feel so bad for her now that I'm a little more mature." Koyusuke said as she looked up into his eyes with a soft, warm smile spread across her lips. He paused for a moment and then continued, "No I don't; I don't regret a damned thing I did to that woman!" Mayumi giggled, she remembered all the things they had done to torture Farah. It had been a game for them to try to annoy her at least once every afternoon. "Yes," She whispered quietly remembering the even herself, "I remember that. I remember hiding in the tree next to the fountain watching as she scolded you and told you to go put your close back on, she had no idea that I was stripped myself, and hanging in the tree like a monkey, until I lost my balance and fell with a splash into the fountain." She allowed Kyousuke to lead her out of his study as she continued to remember the silly things they did as children. |

"For all the times they found one or both of us stripped naked, I though the elders were going to have kittens!" I laughed, having to bite my lip and stop myself. Laughing too hard stretched the scar tissue on my back, and it was rather painful. Slowly, I calmed down, back to an amused smile. "Maybe that's why they made me move back into the palace. The tradition says I'm supposed to finish my fosterage among the common people... or in this case, lower-classed nobles — no offence. Not that I do half with the most wonderful people I could have ever dreamed of, and the other half with a bunch of wizzled up old sticks-in-the-mud." Now, I sighed, heavily. "They want me to get married, Mayumi. They're expecting children from me before I'm twenty, so I don't make the same mistake as my father, waiting until he was older to have children.... They want me to prepare a legacy before the disease hits me, too. Sometimes, I wish it would just hurry up and take me.... But I can't trust that they'll leave the throne alone until Remiel is finished with his purge." I paused, letting the silence of the hall become marred only by our footfall on the marble. Then, I continued, almost uncertainly. "I-if I did die... would you protect it for me, Mayumi? Until the skies are as blue as you and I only ever dreamed they could be?" |

Mayumi laughed with Kyosuke calming with him as he turned the topic to something serious again. Her eyes softened as she looked at him. She wanted nothing more than to stay here by his side, and make life easy for him again. She wanted to try to comfort him and make him laugh like he had in the old days. She wanted to reassure him that he was doing the right thing, and that ignoring the others was the best thing for the world. "Maybe that's why they made me move back into the palace. The tradition says I'm supposed to finish my fosterage among the common people... or in this case, lower-classed nobles — no offence. But I can't trust that they'll leave the throne alone until Remiel is finished with his purge." He paused and Mayumi's heart beat unnaturally. For reasons she understood but had never really expressed to herself consciously her heart beat in a strange rhythm at the mention of marriage and children. She squeezed Kyosuke's arm where she held it a little, with out realizing it. The silence seemed to stretch on forever as she waited desperately for what he was going to say next. "I-if I did die... would you protect it for me, Mayumi? Until the skies are as blue as you and I only ever dreamed they could be?" Mayumi's heart jumped a little. Of course she would protect the throne. She would give her life to make sure Kyosuke's dreams were respected. Their dreams of blue skies and happiness, and peace. Yet the thought of him dieing was a heavy thing to thing about. She stopped walking and turned into him making sure that she was ginger about her movements. She took him into her arms and made sure she was staring deep into his eyes. They had made it into the gardens and she knew they were alone. She was thankful for that. "Yes, of course I would protect it for you, but I won't let you die easily." So much emotion was being poured into her words she could feel it emanating off her skin. She lowered her voice to a meaningful whisper and continued, "Kyosuke, I will always be by your side to help you though this. I'm not going anywhere unless you tell me to." She lowered her eyes for a second and then brought them back with a sever intensity. "I-I Love you Kyosuke, I always have, and so I'll never let you down." She was blushing hard and she wanted nothing more than to bury her face in his shoulder and hide, but she held his gaze and waited for him to say something. Her heart thundered irregularly and she absently wondered if it would ever go back to normal again. |

I allowed myself to smile, but only minutely. I felt my body heat, and there was something in the back of my throat keeping me from responding immediately. I tried to swallow it, but it remained. Someone was on my side. More than that, someone loved me. It wasn't as if I hadn't known, it had always been a little more than obvious that Mayumi and I were made for eachother, but it felt extraordinary to hear it. Finally, I pressed past the barrier and forced speech. "Mayumi.... I want you to marry me. I know, I complained about it earlier; but if I marry you, I'll never have to be with someone I don't know or don't like. It won't seem like a chore to have children and raise little princes and princesses. We'll have fun together; we'll make the world better. Besides," I let myself laugh. "Sakagami Mayumi sounds beautiful." |

Mayumi couldn't breathe, the silence was painful, he smiled and then stopped. He looked alarmed, could it be he didn't feel the same way. Her pulse was slamming into her chest at her confession. In all the fairy tale books she had read it had gone the other way, the boy confessing to the girl, but of course Mayumi would be the one to switch things up, and the suspense was killing her. "Mayumi.... I want you to marry me. I know, I complained about it earlier; but if I marry you, I'll never have to be with someone I don't know or don't like. It won't seem like a chore to have children and raise little princes and princesses. We'll have fun together; we'll make the world better. Besides," he sighed "Sakagami Mayumi sounds beautiful." Mayumi could breath again, she was beaming as she threw herself into his arms and buried her face into his shoulder. She was crying tears of joy. She looked up at him breathlessly. "Yes, Kyousuke!" she replied, "You have no idea how long I've been waiting to hear those words!" She clung to him as her own mind began to wonder to images of growing old with him. Little children running around there feet. His arms around her waste when he needed to know that she was really there. Comforting him as they stood up against the world. It all seemed so lovely! Almost too lovely to be true. She was staring into his eyes, lost in the very idea that they would be hers forever! ---------------------------------------------- AHHHHH This makes me happy :D |
