i dnt smoke so i wouldnt no.. but i dont reckon anyone who smokes enjoys it just because they like smoking. i mean everyone tells them off and stuff.. and they know they shouldnt do it themselves and its bad for them... so they are in a constant battle between themselves. |

people said to me...just because it looks...manly... O_O i hate the smell of smoke...so i won't smoke...ever >.> besides, i have trouble breathing sometimes, if i smoke, it's like i'm killing myself O_O and cigarettes are epensive here nowadays, i rather save my money and buy better stuffs...XD  |

D; I agree. Smoking is never good for you. :l But -don't blame me for saying this but..- I really had a few instances wherein I had thought of smoking. ;A; Just to get the feeling of it... what does it really feel like... why people are so addicted... D: But then again, research shows facts. :D Mm. Maybe those are one of the reasons why teens try to smoke - experimenting.  |

I saw lots my school student smoking outside school and my dicipline teacher make sportchek all boys student,I found litter at one student pocket and the next him tell to me,he bring ciggerite inside shose...his mom don't take care for him...I said 'batter you die,lots smoking"...lots of effect of smoking batter than become "cool"...uuueeewwkkk....   |

i've seen this news two or three years ago i can't re-call about that clear-ly but i am sure this boy was so young like.. 5 years old? he was pretty much addicted with smoking. it can be caused by staring at his parents' smoking habit since he was very little. once her mother tell her to not overdo it, he was mad like "ARGH!!" and will keep whimpering until he was given a bunch of cigarette's pack in a day. he was a strong smoker in his young age. that would cause a serious damage to his lungs. he choose cigarette than milk. he was so addicted with smoking in his young age. me and my mother were having a dinner in some café in a mall. next to the table where me and my mother sat on, smokes spread around my face *shock* and it was from this male who were having a dinner with his girlfriend -__- then i keep waving hand and waving the menu book to blow the smokes away from me, but.. he doesn't seem to realize that he was smoking in a public area which various individual can visit AND i was thinking he was like don't care as long as he can smoking -__- then we decide to move to the safer table (and we've got the table which the air conditioner blow the air to the table where we sat on *grin*) you are smoking to find the reason why some individual are addicted to smoking? that's a good research. do spread some question related with the topic to help the research more. *grin* this is just for sharing some information and/or experience. i has no intention to force you to the corner or humiliate/disparage you. i just warn you once and it's your choice to continue or stop. it is you yourself who are able to control yourself. oh my.. i am suppose to answer, not to pour these philosophy-like experiences. |

Well some people are influenced at a young age and they just get hooked on to a cigerrete for the first time that they put one in thier mouth. Some people do it because they think that it's "Cool" or "In" but it's not. It's gross and disgusting and it makes your health go bad. The worst result: YOU CAN DIE FROM SMOKING TOO MUCH    |

I remembered I met one of my friend's friend--- she was really obsessed about her looks and weight, and she's freaking mental. When it comes to smoking, she had to smoke because 1. it's a part of the Scene fashion and 2. Obviously, suppress herself from eating normally ("After I smoke, I only ate a slice of pizza and a cookie for dinner"). Seriously, those words stuck in my head like a nightmare. She's so sad and mental. And only 14 years old. HOW SAD. |

my opinion: kids see their parents/friends/someone they know w/e smoking and they imitate it so they can fit in with the popular kids so they have that hollow sense of acceptance in their lives.  |

Children tend to mimic anything they see, right? Well, this behavior still remains when one's still a teenager. Soon enough smoking become an identity, instead of just "mimicking". If you want to prevent your children from smoking, the best solution there is to avoid them to see people smoke. ... an almost impossible resolution indeed.  |

| Eh, it's much better than it was before. All those DARE and no-smoking turn-offs. There are far less teens smoking than there were before. Seriously. And that's not even mentioning the rest of the world. Japanese people lurve to smoke. So do Chinese people, Italians, French, you name it. |

Well, as far unhealthy habits go, it takes a veeeeeeeeery long time to kill you, you'll probably only lose a decade or so off your lifespan from a pack a day habit. Even then, there are plenty of smokers who live to or past the average life expectancy. We all die eventually anyway, hell I've known people who have died younger than I am now, so don't begrudge us a habit that makes our lives more pleasant. Just a little something to think about.  |

A big thing nowadays is smokers are getting younger and younger. People, kids, see their older brothers/sisters or older kids smoking, and they think it makes them cool. They then decide to try smoking, even though they don't like it. Then, they get addicted to it and even younger kids see them doing it assuming it makes them cool. Then these younger kids start, get addicted, and the cycle goes on. Truthfully, the smoking habits of kids is horrible; I know a 13 year old kid who started smoking when he was 11. His brother doesn't even try to stop him. It's pretty bad, but smoking seems apart of everyday life so despite dangers, kids look at it as a normal and cool thing to be taken lightly. In reality, smoking is a big deal that can cut years off your life. |

some of the smokers nowadays started smoking when they're 12-15 years old (yes, this is the sad truth people). The first thing that came to their mind is "curiosity", then the next is "do I look cool?" can't blame them, they are still kids who have not developed a mentality to separate what is cool and what is not...... Besides, those ages are our puberty, when we entered our rebellious period. It's up to the parents' power to control them. next, comes the highschool age (15-18 years old) that produces the most smokers they smoke due to peer pressure, or to relieve their tension from everyday stress. Yes, smoking DOES relieve your tension However, most of the case is because they have nothing to do and they chose to spend their time with smoking. No sports, no games, no productive activities, nothing... Finally comes the addiction, which is..... well, it can't be explained by words, it just feels good to smoke, you know, that feeling when you inhale ^^;; I experienced all of the above, sadly. Yes, I was a smoker when I was in junior high (8th grade, 14 years old), before I got hooked up to arcades. I always laughs at myself everytime I recollect, "Was that me? Why did I smoke? For what?" ^^;; First was "curiosity", the next is "to look cool", and the last is because I didn't have anything to do, and something like rebelling my parents and to relieve stress....... Mainly because my Playstation got confiscated for a long time -_-;; (you see why I'm laughing here?) then I got hooked up to competitive arcade gamings when I was in highschool, which led me to save my money for arcades rather than cigarettes (in Indonesia, you can get about 3-4 simulation games or 7 fighting games at the same price for one pack of cigarette). Besides friendly competitions, you have something to show off to the crowd, which does make you cool in a point ^^ nowadays, I only smoke just for the fun of it. Like smoking at parties or at reunions with highschool boys, something is off without cigarettes ^^;; Well, as a social smoker myself, I'm not against teenage smoking as long as said smoker has SELF-CONTROL (which is almost impossible for teenage smokers)... As long as they know when to smoke, and when to stop... (going out of campus at break time to smoke is a sign of not having self-control) A teenage smoking daily afterschool, still wearing his uniform, is a big turn-off A teenage sacrificing his meal budget to buy cigarettes, is idiotic A teenage smoking in front of his female friends who obviously despise cigarettes, is inconsiderate A teenage, smoking four packs daily without knowing when to stop as in, "Only two packs today... Er... just one more pack!".... has no self control A teenage smoking at weekends on a cafe, where he is considerate toward the non-smokers, and places a limitation on himself as to "Only two packs today... Okay, that's the last one, I'll stop!".... is totally fine with me However, I can only tolerate teenage boys... It is disgusting for teenage females to smoke, really..... Not to be sexist whatsoever, but... Girls actually ruin their own image by smoking -_-;; Girls might despise boy smokers to a degree, but fellow boys are fine with their friends smoking... On the other hand, when a teenage girl smoke, her friends will try to get her out of it forcefully, and boys will never think of her as a decent girl anymore, they'll brand her as a "no good" and is totally out of the "good girls list" (remember kids, all boys want good girls ^^)

| Statistically more youth or "teenagers" do NOT smoke compared to those that do. So your making a false generalization..that is a fact for North America, I don't know about other places in the world. |

Hmm... I can't really vouch for statistics. Although the reasons stated above by "H" above are mostly true. It's also to be taken into consideration the environment that the alleged teenager is in. If a teen grows up in a bad neighborhood and is in a nasty situation that he has no control over, why wouldn't he? As inexperienced as he is, he may not know better or may feel that it doesn't matter. The adolescent is usually in that transition stage where he learns lots of new things through personal experience.
