I think we should keep on watching anime in order to learn even the basic Japanese.

It's suprising how much you can pick up watching anime. In my case, I learned hiragana and some basic grammar, this way you can easily understand and differenciate between nouns, verbs, particles and whatnot. By having this basic understanding along with the subtitles, you'll quickly pick up words, and after you've watched a fair amount of anime, you can turn off subtitles or watch a raw, and you'll be suprised at how much you actually understand, well at least that was my experience. I was especially suprised when I understood words I wasn't really aware that I even knew.

A lot.... Just a lot... I had been dealing with japanese language since 11 years ago(Probally I am very young back then, don't understand really). Full Voiced japanese games works well too, I seriously recomend full voiced japanese game over anime.

None. Frankly, it'll confuse you more since Nihongo used in an animation is definitely not for beginners. You'll hear a lot of variation for one word, with different meanings. Unless you have someone to ask about the differences between the used words in an anime, it's better off to study proper beginner's japanese in language school or something (-_-)

まぁ、参考にはなるんだろうけど日本語って個人の解釈次第でいろんな意味で受け取られるからね~ それで頭の中がこんがらがって逆に混乱しちゃったら勉強してる意味なくなくない~?(-_-)

it depends on your determination on learning. Use A Jap/Eng dictionary for more resources.
Thats right animealanna, we can't understand Japanese by just listening to J-music.

it would be presumptious to assume you can learn any decent Japanese through anime...

maybe sharpening your listening skills if you ALREADY learned MUCH more than the basics.

But then, trust me, people don't talk like anime in real life.

If anime motivates you to go and actually learn Japanese, then by all means go ahead. I've posted at least once, and maybe I was nicer then, but...

Short answer: NONE! It doesn't work! The end!

Long answer: You can argue that you might learn some basic phrases (PRO-Tip: All hot-blooded anime protagonists say the exact same things), but the fact is that watching anime will give you the understanding of Japanese language and culture needed to actually talk with people in real life. You will usually hear many informal and often purely colloquial language and none of the written stuff at all. Imagine meeting someone for the first time and saying "Whassup. foo'?" when you only meant to say "nice to meet you." Just as people don't talk like cartoon characters in real life, Japanese people don't talk like their two-dimensional counterparts. As wakka9ca said, the only way you might gain something from anime is to sharpen your listening skills after you've learned much more than the basics; and even then, anime characters are intentionally voiced much more exaggerated and deliberately than how real people speak.

Some idiot claim I read:
"But my friends who take Japanese at school say my Japanese is really good!"
Consider this - they've taken it for no more than 3 or 4 years. Especially if you've never had any notably long conversations with an actual native speaker, you won't be able to tell the difference.

Look, don't believe me? Try having a conversation with a native speaker who doesn't slow down by 800% for you, or try writing even an elementary essay (that is, if you somehow managed to pick up written language from spoken dialogue), and take note of your EPIC FAILURE.

@mewarmo990: you are 100% right.

The HARD part: TRY to WRITE an argumentative essay on the possible solutions to the aging population in industrialized countries (e.g. Japan) in Japanese. That will determine your writting skills.

BTW, getting to know how to read Japanese is already a respectable feat for a foreigner.

Also, getting to know how to read is NOT equal to understanding conversations.
Oral Japanese is quite different from written Japanese (+ you have to adjust to the speed + possible mumbling from the speaker)
Plus, not every Japanese talk as clearly as news broadcasters or anime voice actors/actresses.

Conclusion = guaranteed headache for beginners and even intermediate learners.

Don't get discouraged though. The real best way (not realistic though) is to actually go to Japan, find some work and live there for a while. Adjust to your environment. If not, at least find a Japanese conversation partner that can practice with you.

Very true, wakka9ca. Reading and writing are going smoothly for me, but with younger people especially I really have to struggle to pick everything out.

It sounds intimidating, I know, but the first thing to do is to start with some basic language classes. You might find that you even know some of it thanks to anime, but without a strong foundation in basic grammar and 丁寧語 (teineigo - standard polite language) you'll be hard-pressed to hold even the most basic conversations with Japanese speakers. On a side note, children might actually be easier because Japanese education doesn't focus on polite language until about middle school. But we're mostly foreigners so that doesn't matter to us.

This reminds me about an incident from a long while back about a friend who learned some VERY rudimentary Japanese from anime obsession and his grandmother. He was boasting to me about his decidedly superior understanding of Japanese language compared to what the Japanese 1 teacher was teaching (like, in his words, how "うるさい urusai", "noisy", is actually supposed to be "うるせ uruse", "shut up" when people actually talk. Riiight.). He took the Japanese 1 final to try and get into Japanese 2, and failed miserably. Guess he never actually learned to read/write/do anything?

I'm honestly surprised this thread's gone on as long as it has. Stop kidding yourselves. On the bright side, AFTER learning a few years of basic Japanese language, you'll find yourself actually understanding a lot more of anime dialogue (maybe even catching fansubber mistakes, which happens a lot more often than you know), and not just because you've read the subtitles for similar phrases hundreds of times. You might even learn something new at that point :)

Speak fluent japanese by watching anime...I guess that is possible. To learn a language you must have motivation on it.

But you can definitely not read or write Japanese by watching anime.Heheheh

I did start learning Japanese from anime but I think I learned more from Japanese songs. also since song translations gets corrected a lot by who ever sees that is wrong.
still I can't say that I learned a lot and I'm not really sure about the grammar of the songs.
I did pick up some kanji from song lyrics though I keep forgetting most of them.

Well, I learn basic japanese from watching anime (I spend almost 4 hours on anime everyday) and it sparks my interest in the language.

I went on to take up japanese classes and I find it easy to follow the pace of my sensei than most of my classmates who had no prior knowledge to jap at all.

And now I could just watch the raws without any problems.

anime's a good way to spark the interest, but, take it from me, there's nothing like going to Japanese class four times a week!
it makes you never want to leave, or maybe change your major to Japanese or some other drastic 日本語-が-大すきです choice like that lol!

^ Yeah, I agree. Watching anime & going to Japanese class five times a week for 3 years already in my school, really helped me. Because I have to take my language regents soon.

Another good way is to buy a japanese language book authored by japanese people.

Once you know the sentence pattern, memorize more vocabularies and download raw manga and try to read and translate it.

Works for me....But it is time consuming.
