I don't see why we should be labeled as weird. I mean, what can we do about it? It's just plain that we love the whole Anime culture just like how other people are very passionate about other things; what's so wrong or disgusting about that? Look at football fanatics; some of them gather into riots after games and actually go out and wreak havoc on the streets. People get hurt or even die because of their actions, and they're not labeled as weird. I have good reason to believe that everyone here in this forum, and every other otaku in the world is a kind and quite sociable person at the very least, and would most likely not end up in some sort of Anime riot (Although that would seem quite interesting, hahaha!!! ^^) Anyway, my point is, we're just people who absolutely LOVE anime. And no one can do a thing about it dammit!!! Long live anime!! ^^   |

well...if they are really 'into' it...but they are absolutely not a freak!!(i'm into so much of the anime too) what could really interests me was anime and the only thing i can talk for most of the time also anime...(i wouldnt care how people thinks about me...in fact being a weirdo or otaku isnt something i feel embarrassed about... and i know a librarian..she's more more into the anime(especially bleach) till she likes to cosplay her...(i mean rukia) lol~anyway...i wouldnt feel any weird about her... So don't say anime fanatics are weird...(T_T) cause for me...those people that watch anime are really kind... |

An "otaku" is a fanatic, not necessarily anime fanatic, but a fanatic of something, be it cooking, internet, anime/manga, or something else. I won't "declare" myself as an anime otaku, since I'm not that obsessed with anime, but I'll admit that I have some otaku quality in me ;) But I think I'm really close to being an internet otaku though... O_O   |

A "fanatic", mostly brings the "otaku", to mind. A regular fan, such as myself, can love anime so much in this world... as I do, and nobody would say anything. ^_^ Now otakus, are a different story that I won't get into. D:

Well, basically, they call people jerks and aliens and stuff like that, because they think that anime is bad, and that anime is not reality, concluding that people who like anime are people who are crazy about things that doesn't exist. But really, that we like anime or not, it's none of their business. Neh?
Laziness is required as well as Oxygen.

I had to take the quiz: 1. Jee...I talk about a lot more random stuff... 2. Frankly speaking, I think their clothes are not comfy...but that's the way it looks to me...You wouldn't catch me even TRYIN one out! 3. Certainly not! I make friends with a lot of people easily... 4. Ok, this one might be true, but I also listen to my country's music (not Japan, mind u...lol) so it doesn't count...I guess 5. This one is ALMOST true, if I didn't watch some other tv shows few days on the week. But mainly only Anime, so I have to count this one in. 6. I can live without thinking of Anime...I only think of Anime when I'm watching it 7.That's just...not me. I don't do stickers ;P 8. I used to do that for very particular animes, but now I just know the everyday info that u get from watching it!! I forgot all that good stuff... 9. i think physical fitness comes first, Education second...unless u wanna start counting food shelter and clothing? Anime isn't anywhere near the top. 10. I NEVER do that. it's up to others if they want to watch anime, isn't it? So all in all, (Sorry for doing this unnecessarily, but I HAD to...it beckons!) I guess I'm not such a freak as I thought! But I just wanted to add as an end note, that even things like these don't judge you...but the one thing you know you should never do is not accept someone just because they don't do/like what you do! This goes to both sides of the question: anime 'freaks' and 'normal' ppl (i guess). We just need to remember the line between fiction and reality, in these cases.  |

well, i think there is an edge that when you reach will consider you a freak and its not just in anime it can be in anything well since we're talking about anime then for me this is a list that will consider you freakish and i don't intend on hurting anyone's feelings anyway... 1.if all you talk about is anime 2.if you dress like them, like eeeew! especially if you really feel the character's life force in you eeewer! 3.if you don't socialize or make friends with people who don't watch them 4.if all you listen to is anime music or something simmilar 5.all you watch is anime or anything simmilar 6.you can't live without thinking of anime 7.when you put anime stickers or any sorts in most of your things 8.you know everything about a peticullar anime their seiyuus,birthdates,episodes without using something to remind you about it 9.you think anime is more important than staying physically fit or healthy, school and many more 10.and finally if you have this trait then you automatically have problems you think anyone who doesn't watch anime is a freak so if you have like 50% of these traits then your a freak except if you have the last trait which automatically makes you a freak oooh deja vu anyway this is only my opinion, okay. as of me i have trait #6 i can live but i will feel something is missing in my life though!  |

Like quite a few ppl said earlier, it depends of the level of addiction/obsession toward the anime. People consider others weird when? When they are different. It's of course not as bad as certain other thing, but still. *long message ahead* (It's more a like a ramble) Note >> this message is more a general thing and not particularly aimed at 'anime otaku' but any other 'otaku', as well. I have a friend who makes fun of the Japanese language every time I singing one lightly to myself (I can sing a little) and she makes up non-sense word-like things claiming its Japanese just to make me stop, lol. I think it's funny. I don't hold it against her, because I came to an understand about this situation: people aren't comfortable when others around them are too different, or seem too different. She wants to understand me, that's all. So I go through the trouble to translate it for her and never yell at her for interrupting. Some people are unable to say it, but they want to be a part of it. They want in on it. They can't ask though. That's one reason. So they act weird around you. I'm far from obsessed with anime. I like it a lot! I love manga! And I like the music and all; It's got something deep there for us all to see, to realize. But My level of obsession doesn't go any higher than in my computer. My friend just told me today, "You're the first person I met who learns Japanese." Don't be surprised. i live in a country where people only speak the language they know since birth (and other NATIVE languages)and give little appreciation to other languages...lol. Some people just call others weird or odd or freaks when they are different, or act differently. It's a human mind thing. There's no reason to be bothered about it unless they are REALLY harassing you... Deep inside, everyone's different. Maybe they just don't appreciate the way you're different. Sometimes, it's their loss. On the same note, however, there is a LEVEL to expression...really. It is over-doing it when you go around dressed up as an anime chara and yell famous lines...that can freak others out. Reason being it is random and probably over-expressive. You have to keep in mind that Anime is in the realms of 'fiction'. That's all. The most important thing to do about this situation (and any other situation, actually) is to keep an open mind. If someone is expressing him/herself a little too much (ex. ur friend) you should tell them to turn the notch down a bit... There are still billions of other ways to show your love for something. I know people who have no appreciation for any other music except our native music, which was ALMOST racist. But not exactly. When I used to live in US, people used to think it was REALLY weird that I didn't listen to American music. I never felt it was weird. I listened to American music whenever someone recommended it to me, actually, if the song was available. I'm not saying American music is bad, it's just I never had a chance to listen to it, because I was really absorbed into other music. I'm not your average teen ager: I still let my parents do my shopping for me (I hate shopping) and I don't listen to American music unless someone shoves it in my hand and sticks ear phones in my head. I can't describe 'fashion' and hate being in the same room as make-up. Food is far from my favorite thing and I love to exercise. I actually LIKE my teachers (some). People like these- they may be considered weird. What we should know best is never to mind and move on - because you'll always have friends who appreciate you for who you are, etc. Just know to have an open heart to anyone else who is different- and they will feel accepted. Why should we know best? Because, we're all unique - but we live the one and same Earth after all. Let the world see you - but be sure you see the world as well. There's no need to blend in if we're all different, right? I sincerely don't believe 'otaku' should be used to term anyone... We all have different interests. What's so funny about this friend of mine who keeps making fun of me: she is obsessed with a lot of other things she can't stop chatting about! |

| I didn't bother reading the whole thread. Just the first couple of pages. But first of all, it's a general American public point of view, people just view anime as "animated porn" or "senseless gore and violence" due to past media criticisms and it influenced these peoples' mentality of anime and it's fans. I mean, why do people look down on Star Wars fans and Warcraft fans? Because of the bad publicity they get such as they leave their kids in the car to die while they play a game or refuse to play them. I am not saying ALL Warcraft fans or players are like this, but examples of a minority that made these stupid mistakes should not be associated with the fandom as a whole. |

I am an anime fan, and i DON'T consider myself weird...but there are some people that make others think like that about Otakus... A good example...Peru There is a shopping center, that is called the anime land, because there are a lot of anime stores, so on the weekends,,"Otakus" go dressed up, and start acting like anime characters...It's a little weird..."Outsiders" (Normal people who go shopping at this center) Look at them like they are crazy, and it's because these people do act crazy...I mean...it's ok that you like anime and everything...but at points they over, and i mean...they OVER exagerate! |

Do this... Kidnapped the one that call your friend a freak. Tight him to a chair or sofa and let him watch some cool anime that might suits his type. Anime is something that needs time to understand cos anime got something behind it. The best thing usually un-obivious.
