I...wouldn't say it's too late. But are your rents going to approve of this? :P Now, on a more serious note: Learning Japanese, well, it just depends on how fast you generally learn stuff. Plus, you just naturally learn faster if you're submerged into the environment. But's it's hard. Anything worth having or knowing is. As to starting a new life, try learning to be satisfied with the one you have right now first. Dreams usually don't last in savor, no matter how good they seem. There's no guarantee that you will be perfectly happy if you just suddenly move to Japan. I'm not trying to degrade your idea, I'm just saying, be cautious and aware of whatever consequences may follow from your actions. Dreams can always be lived later on. Life cannot. And also, as a side note, what u see on TV and anime isn't always true.
Anime is w00t. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. =)

Of course not! hey! i'm 13 too you know. i too want to live there and just be one of them but there's this thing that you'll never forget about your real home. About the learning part, hmm..my big sister loves japanese too and so do my 6 year old one. We're starting to learn japanese by reading simple books about them. Language, food, culture and everything. (if u try that, u'll be so fascinated about japan. trust me.) So just relax and learn a bit about them then when ur old enough, u can go there. Maybe we can tour japan together! (p.s. if i helped in anyway, please reply to my thread: "i think i'm turning japanese...what about you?") ~peace out!~

I taken japanese for two years almost now and It will take you mre than a few months.Plus unless your"rents"are super rich then you've got no chance of survival in japan because things are veery exspensive in japan plus cost of living. It cost a fortune just to get there and rent even a cheap hotel until the house was ready. So I suggest you wait a while and save up lots of money and learn as much japanese as you possibly can take maybe 2 years and then take another course in collage. Not to sound mean
I winner I'm a sinner do you want my autograph?I'm a loser what a joker I'm playing my joke upon you 'cause there is nothing better to do...

If you're moving to japan. The 1st thing to be worried about is culture shock!!! Some apartments don't have bathrooms and you have to go to public bathrooms~ It is also scary to think that few japanese speak english. So you're on your own.You also have to learn kanji, katakana and hiragana. Think of the cost of living in japan too~ But if it's your dream, I think you should follow it.But always include a back up plan in case things go wrong. **How would you know an apple is sweet is you haven't tasted it yet~ gambaremasu!

i'd like to go to Japan as well, but as some other people have mentioned take into consideration the costs. It wouuld be best to maybe take a vacation there, it is very different from here... er well if your HERE is my HERE ^_^(canada) Anyway, the language is pretty easy to learn, you jsut have to keep at it, i can speak it pretty fluently but i still need to learn more words and more kanji *ugh* but don't let your dream slip away, keep going for it!

ive been to japan many times, and since my dad was stationed there i lived there as a kid, i didnt learn much japanese and have forgotten most of it. but id suggest going for as long as a week to see if you like it. it's really crowded, somewhat expensive, and they dont really like tourists or "non-asians" generally. but i like their customs and traditions, although it kinda messed me up, there it's rude to look at somone in the eye so i learned that, but here it's the opposite, im trying to adjust even now. hope i helped. ![]() |
Re: is it too late?

I used to live there for 9 years, but...I'm not sure about that>rude to look in the eyes Also, the fact that people seemed unfriendly to you is probably due to the US military bases...have you heard about crimes(rapes, murders, etc.) by American GIs over there, Korea, and Philippines, etc? Yeah, I agree with your idea about a week or so trip there before making serious decision...

you're too naive. go find a life/finish school with perfect/good results and urge your parents allow you to study in japan. thats a good one, works for me, but i prefer staying in one place. lazy to adapt to new places. |
Re: is it too late?

well as far as the rudeness, its somewhat old fashioned, but thats just what i learned in my area, but we didnt actually live on base, but i have heard of the crimes. and it wasnt really me they were mean to but they didnt like annoying tourists much. but it was a little while ago maybe things have changed, but i went last summer for about two weeks and they seemed cool. though i wasnt just going cause i like anime and wanted to buy manga and games. but if you do go buy a all day train pass and be prepared to be crammed, and dont be afraid to get a little lost ^O^ ![]() |

Haha, you sound like I did when I was 13. I'm 15 now, and I'm just preparing to go sometime in the future for a trip. I had always been interested in the language, culture, etc. So when I asked my parents if we go visit Japan(visit, not move mind you) and they showed no interest and said no, but that I could go when I'm older, say college, I decided to prepare. And now for the past couple years I've been researching Japan, following it in the news, etc., and teaching myself Japanese and finally I've been able to take it at a local university. So, I just prepare for when I can go on a trip, and that's all you should focus on. You can't aspire to do something you don't know. What you have is INFATUATION with Japan, I highly doubt you would actually want to live there, at least, not until you've been there. For example, by your age, Japanese students are expected to know about 1000 Kanzi(pronounced kanji), speak fluently(duh), read katakana and hiragana, and be well versed in the cultural nuances unknown to us in the states. Moving there abruptly would be full of cultural shock, not to mention the fact that your studies would be severely disrupted. Think big, aspire to act big, start small.

Yup, its too late. Give it up. Your stuck where you are for life and there is no hope in going to Japan. Its best to figure that out now then be disappointed later. Have a nice life ;-).

I don't agree with what HACKED said...You can do anything really if you put your mind to it...other than flying without some difficult contraption ^_^ You still have time you are 13 and have lots of life left so therefore you can make it there! Good luck and all the best!

Re: is it too late?

me...i just got hooked on anime/manga last summer. so far, i'm learning Japanese in my own time since it's too late for me to change my degree to a BA. I'm a BS in Math and a senior at that, so i need to graduate soon. but when i get to Grad school, i may check out some of the study abroad programs and if I like it as well as I think I will, I may go live in Japan for a year or two and teach Math/English at a cram school or something like that, put my degree to work for me! but i want to learn the language and take a couple classes in it first to make sure I can actually hold a conversation. learning the language isn't that hard if you've studied Spanish before. the pronuciation of vowels is the same and most of the english sounds remain, some change slightly, the grammar seems pretty consistent, and no worry about feminine/masucline words...whew! but also consider...you're only 13 years old. i know many have already said this, but how would you make it on your own over there, esp. if you're parents are against this? take your time, i'm 23 and don't plan to go over there anytime soon, maybe 3-4 years from now, but it all depends on what happens with my schooling, etc. it may be 5-6 years from now or later! |
