the internet is a great tool for translating and looking up meanings of words, etc. however, to learn a spoken language, you will need to hear and speak it. this is something best accomplished in real life! my recommendation is: take a japanese class at your school or local community college. if you are able to, talk to the foreign exchange program director at your school, and see if you can exchange to japan. immersion is the best way to learn any language. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I wanna learn japanese. As in badly. But the stupidity of the universe has me stuck with no chance at all to study it. In one hand, I am currently enrolled and would be graduating as a scholar in a science-centered school, and getting a course that deviates from any science-related studies would have me hounded by our school registrar, with my chance of graduating reduced to nil unless I pay up big bucks just to pursue a language course, and on the other hand, I can study for one year in the 2nd (science-related) course I like for one year, and after I acquire my permanent records, i could study the next year pursuing my lifelong goal of a language class... or... I can STUDY Japanese this summer, but what is the off-chance that I'll probably forget everything (seeing as I'm the only one interested in it at home and within a few thousand kilometers of a radius)by the start of my college years? Wouldn't I be just wasting money, if that were to be the case? Gaaah... I need your help! Pros and Cons... Drown me with all that you could think off, onegai!
I am a Wittle Fweax, and am proud of it!

Just pick up a grammar book and get cracking. You don't need to be in a classroom to learn the language (though you should get into one if you have the chance). The only thing you need is the desire, the drive, and the commitment needed to see your studies through to the end.

It'll be much better if you really have a tutor so you can really learn alot from it than the books/dictionary/etc.

If you're talking about high school then you are far off. High School just teaches you the basics. Casual talking. You probably don't learn about formal conversations yet. Nihongo wa muzukaishii ne demo ganbatte kudasai! |

For self-study... you really need to buy a lot of materials. Get yourself a good dictionary, a grammar book, and a book that teaches you how to write the characters (including the kana). You'll also need lots of internet! But also a very important idea is to find a good textbook that they use for classes in a school. This way you not only know what you should be studying and in what order, but you'll also get many examples and descriptions. Personally, my favorite textbook is JSL/JWL, but that really needs a classroom setting to work properly. Become able in Japanese takes about 4-5 years with formal study, and to be fluent, 8 or more years is needed. With self study, you have to add a few years to these numbers to make it accurate due to the lack of a teacher. Of course, these are averages based on regular people... some people could take longer and some people could go faster. But you really have to study hard every day to get it down. |

Just wanting to make sure, Internet-based learning only will not give a great true Japanese language learning (besides the actual traveling)? Or are some sites exceptions? (There seems to be a mix on the different threads.) I've checked out the ones posted and they seem in-depth but ever since I fell into a scam trap (thankfully was smart enough to never give valuable-not-kittykat's-money-info away ^o^) I've been wondering about all sorts of other sites and if they work. I see the two might not sound very related, but my brain is fried today :) |

Re: I wanna learn japanese

I know this way wont teach you everything you need to know about the Japanese language and such, but if you are just starting its kinda fun if you download(or buy whatever floats your boat)songs and/or Cds from animes, or just random Japanese singers, then google the lyrics and try and say them yourself. I still definatly haven't mastered the language since I only started this year. But from my experience the songs do help a little.
