Is it mandatory to take English courses in Japanese High Schools? Are there other choices on what language they can learn? If so, what are they? Are there any classes that are taught only in Japan that would be cool if taught over here? Thx! >_>

Well it wasnt before but more and more schools are putting english in their school learning...they have it in school for about 7 years...some of them are really dedicated to learn english.....Well there is also spanish......just depends on what shcool you go too...not really...the clases are the same...but you wont learn about japanese culture here unless you take japanese history...which doesnt really exsist. But we have to clean schools at the end of the day for usually about 30 minutes..like wash boards pick up trash etc |

I'm a school teacher applying for a Fulbright in Japan, and according to the program plan we can teach one week of either English or another foreign language if we are certified. I'm certified in Elementary Ed. Middle School Science and in Spanish so I might check out to see the languages that are accually taught in Japanese school system. |

They start English in first year of Jr. High and learn it until the end of high school. But I can say for certain that there are A LOT of private language schools.

Well I'm a student in Japan, and I know that it isn't compulsory, but many schools have it in their curriculum anyway. In fact, almost all schools. In some, you will only have to take English until high-school, where you have the option to take communication (which is basically the base syllabus and added English). Studying isn't very intense until koutougakou san-nen (high-school third-year) because this is when everyone takes the final school exams and entrance exams for University/College. So 12 year-olds don't usually study abnormally hard. Basically, the teaching system is as follows: the teachers are here to educate, not to force education upon the students. So if you want to go to sleep, or talk, or do something completely different, then that is most often accepted. It is one's OWN responsibility to learn. UncleChan |

I'm not positive about the English being mandatory in schools and although I live in the US I've studied the Japanese school systems thouroughly and I do know that at some point they learn english (as do a mojority of other countries schools) I do know though that materials studied in Japan as well as the courses students take are very rigerous and tougher then that of American schools. But the reason kids have such trouble is because of the high school entrance exams that's why you see what you do in movies, although what you see in movies isn't always true there is usually some sort of truthful explanation that inspired what you see. Another thing is that the teenage suicide rate is higher in Japan they say this is caused by those exams, but like you said Japan is always #1 when it comes the being technologically advanced, maybe there's a method to the madness after all ne?!

Hey! I am planning to study in Tokyo next year. I am 17 this year. But I still have not made my choice of which school to go to. Can you guys help? I am planning to study voice acting. --- http://www.tag.co.jp This school offers voice acting but I was wondering if there are even better choices and will I get a degree after I completed the course. I am also not sure if foreigners are permitted to study voice acting? Could someone with experience help me? I would appreciate greatly! |
