Is anyone here studying in Japan on a foreign exchange program? Or have you been on an exchange to Japan? Please tell me. I want to know how you got into it and the cost of it (Please state the currency). I have been thinking about it for awhile and I want to know what you do there and what its like. I really want to go to Japan and improve my language skills. ãŠããŒã„ã—ã¾ã™ï¼ ![]() |

I did a one semester exchange to Kansai Gaidai in Osaka Japan. It was easy to apply, I just talked to the study abroad supervisor at my college. Of course, it was expensive to live in japan, but I payed tuition to my home university. There are a variety of programs, so ask your study abroad supervisor which is best for you. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I tried YFU's exchange program twice but was turned down both times. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that my friends got to go (cough*bastards*cough). Then again, the only reason one of my friends was able to go was because his grandmother was stinking rich, so if it weren't for her, he'd be in the same boat as I. The program would have been a summer exchange prgram lasting 6 weeks, during which the student would have lived with a host family and would attend local Japanese school. If YFU doesn't give you a scholarship, you have to pay 5000 USD (US dollars $), which my friend's grandmother was able to pay (he went last summer). Our third friend got a scholarship (which just boggles my mind because he's an idiot who knows absolutely nothing about Japanese language or culture; then there's me, who has a 4.1 GPA, tutors inner-city children after school four days a week, and takes self-paid Japanese lessons every weekend; life is never fair -_-*). He leaves July 15th (I think; he may have left already). I'm debating whether or not we'll give him a going-away party (I don't hold grudges, but he has a tendency to rub things in your face). Wow, I never realized how much I tend to ramble. Gomen. |

I went through the Rotary club. 2000 USD$(plus 800 in Insurance). Homestayed, and The Japanese gave me 10000yen every month so in the 11 months I was there, thats 1100$, refunding half of my expences. The greatest experience of my life. Stop thinking about it. You can spend another year in Wherever youre from when you get back. Japan is once in a Lifetime. I also spent 11 months there and am almost completly fluient (although I had to teach myself alot) Plus the school girls are great, (yes they dress like that all day every day) |

What really upset me was I couldn't get into the JET program this year. I've been doing Japanese since high school and have gotten A's in 60% of them, the rest I got B's, and I only got a C once in a Japanese class in college. Furthermore, it's what I also majored in college and I've been tutoring autistic kids since I was 17 as well. I probably won't apply for JET until after graduate school. Right now, I intend on applying for Amity/Aeon.

I'm on YFU exchange now, in Kumamoto. I'm from the UK, but this entire program was free, open to 9 students, and is for 5 months. I applied for 10 months, but the Japanese government decided that they weren't going to fund YFU UK for ten months this year - just to see how successful it is. So I've been here since september. I'm really pleased with how well this is going. That's really tough luck Patty_Mac. I guess it's more competitive in the US. Any advice you could give me ParaParaJMo? 'cause I'm 17, and I'm on a YFU programme to Japan :) Jen, just keep at it if you are learning. There are many patterns in the Kanji, and if faced with Japanese often, you will get the hang of it. YFU gives you these damn sheets from "KUMON". If you are into drills to learn language, then that is probably the way forward, try get KUMON (if you can???). Go through 4A to F, and you will have a lot of vocabulary. Bear in mind that that is 1800 small pieces of paper. Sounds a lot, but it's easy to get through. UncleChan |
