What school do you go to in Japan, if you don't mind me asking? I'm planning on trying to get into an exchange program at a Japanese college but I can't find one that looks right for me. |

Japan is a very lovely place. All the convient stores are always a block away. The food is great. (Sweets. My gosh, the sweets.) Transportation is the best. There is a bus stop at every corner and all go to the train station. The trains are so easy to ride--well. just as long as you stay on the local, the transfers can really kill you if you don't have a guide-- you just have to worry about the morning and afternoon rush. And everyone is polite. Okay, some may call you white devil behind your back but most don't. The language--by my experience-- is easy to understand and learn if you are really into it. Also, did I mention the food? Man, I'm gonna go back. I swear. And I'll finally see the Sapporo Snow Festival and go to Kyoto. I might even want to do to Yokohama Tower again to eat at their Sizzler's nad Sushi Bar. I did mention food, right?

oh, god, the food. i stayed for 4 months with a host family. my host mother's hobby is cooking and gardening - which meant i ate fresh grown, freshly cooked meals every day. i was completely and utterly spoiled rotten! she made fresh bread every other day for breakfast, and sushi every once in a while. the only japanese food i have not the stomach for is Natto. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Jiru-- If you want to see all of Japan, or at least most of it, for as cheap as possible, then I recomend Hitchhicker's Guide to Japan. It's a really good book that explains how to get around Japan on next to nothing using the time honored tradition, Hitchhicking. Actually, Im a little depressed that my trip didn't go as long as it could, and me and Tim ran out of money so we couldn't go on the cross japan trip. **sighs Ah, well, the short run was very successful, got picked up every time in no more than 10 min.

1. yes, Valentine's day works the same as in america. 2. hanami, aoi matsuri, for example. 3. do NOT wear shoes in the house. DO try all the different types of food. 4. japanese people have varied religious affiliations. the majority, from my experience, are not what westerners would consider to be 'religious'. Superstitious perhaps, with omamori and such. i had the chance to see a christian church in japan, which was very energetic and 'fun', compared to the US. There are two major religious influences in old japan that are still seen today: Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto is the ancient worship of the Kami. Shinto shrines are all over the place. Very beautiful! Buddhism was later introduced from the mainland and there are many incredible buddhist temples with giant statues of the buddha. 5. no highschool students drive, rich ones may receive rides though. most students bicycle, some walk. i rode a bike 4 miles from my host family's house every school day. i got in good shape by the end of my stay! :P I did not see a single skateboard during my 4 months in japan, not a one. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
