If I remember correctly, school days are almost the same on here, the Western side, as school starts at about 9 and ends at about 3:05-ish. They're slowly going through a transition to 5 school days (Saturday was also a school day.)

They've got the few national holidays and the spring, summer, and winter vacations.

It's not just Japan that follows that school system. Elementary school (or grade school) goes from 1-6; middle school, 7-9; and high school 10-12.

Here's the lowdown on school life in Japan ( some of it might be dated, though):

School year starts: April
May: Class excursion
June: Parent-teacher assembly
Aug-September: Summer vacation (6 wks)
November-December: Cultural and ath meet
January: Winter vacation (2 wks)
February: School-ending ceremony
March: Graduation Day
April: Spring vacation (2 wks)

TIME-TABLE
8:30-8:45= Morning assembly
8:45-12:25=First 4 classes
12:25-13:05=Lunch
13:05-13:25=Recess
13:25-13:45=Cleaning duty
13:45-15:20=Last 2 classes
15:20-15:30=Homeroom assembly
Then they're free!
