What if?
|
"The world is round." what if it was flat? "then we'd fall off the edge should we venture too far." what if we didn't fall off the edge? "I dont know..." what if it was a square? "huh?" what if it was a triangle? what if? what if? what if? what if? GAH. don't you ever get tired of these what-if questions? Why can't we opt for more varied questions? what-if questions can only be answered then followed by yet another what-if question. Is such a question useful at all? then again, one could argue that one should ask questions in order to learn. without such a question, we may not know what would happen if such a certain situation came up. In my experience: most what-if questions are designed with a subject in mind, and then placed in a situation with certain choices. and then there are the stupid what-if questions designed simply to waste time or provoke laughter among ones peers. What are you're thoughts on the "what if" question itself? Do you think such questions are useful? ![]() |

The 'what-if' type of questions can be useful somehow... usually when a person wants to find out any possible ways to solve a certain problem (like you opinionated). Just to make the thinking process more creative and logical (own reasoning, I suppose). But that kind of question can't make a problem solver to come up with 100% solutions. No matter how many experiments he/she does, what results have come up with; doubts will arise somehow. Some people would waste their questioning time if they just fire off saying "what-ifs" without thinking common sense >_< Then off to another "what-if", again and again. Seriously, that sort of people must be so lazy to conduct their own research. Just get on with their lives, then~! |

If the world was round it would be stood on the back of four elephants on a ginat turtle that swims through space. If you fell off the edge you could get thrown up the other side. Still, I gotta agree with the above, what ifs are for folks that are just too damn lazy to use common sense for themselves. Another is the brilliant but if that was real question. Ever had one of those? I have a cousin who does it all the time. I'll be playing FF12 and fighting something like Yiazmat. Not getting anywhere. Then my cousin will say, 'If that was real, the dragon would've eaten you by now.' To which I reply,'If that was real, that dragon wouldn't exist in the first place and neither would Ivalice, chocobos, airships etc.' Ever had that? The only what ifs that are any good to us are the one we ask ourselves just to give us the inspiration to do something. Like: 'What if I put four spoonfuls of chilli sauce in the Ackees and Saltfish?' or what if I eat 3 whole manta ray fins instead of 1? Y'know those sort. ![]() |

I just found this quite interesting. the other day my teacher was being bombarded by what-if questions (of the useless sort) then he declared "NO WHAT IF QUESTIONS". then my friend raised his hand and said "SUPPOSE the industrial hadn't taken place in europe. what would happen then? what the...? haha, he found a way around it. so apparently there's more than one way to ask a "what-if question". different wording, but serves the same function. I'd actually like to try that on the next person who tells me "no what if questions." ![]() |

@raystorm- lolololols! I think people would react the same way ^_^; I think 'What-if' questions may be useful when we are estimating something in order to get that exact (or near to) result (gah, I took Accounting course--- most of decision-making are estimation DX) Who knows 4 tbspfuls of hot sauce can be a culinary craze? I guess this type of question can lead to opportunity or threat. I really like your 'Yiazmat' theory, renshi_sho! XDDDD |

XD yeah, you can guess my frustration if you've ever played FF12 and tried to fight that monster. It's got 60,000,000 hp. It takes around 5 or so hours to beat normally. Having an annoying pain in the arse cousin who has no common sense doesn't help. 4 spoonfuls is not good btw. It's super hot, which is good, I love my hot food, to me cajun isn't even a tingle. But 4 of spoons of 'Da Bomb' sauce in Ackees and Saltfish just destroys the flavour. In future I'm just gonna use capsicum sauces instead. But what if I add.... ![]() |

@renshi_sho- XD here goes the 'what if'! I never played FF12 game but I saw my sis play that game though (I can't remember she ever fought Yiazmat). Sometimes I help her when there's boss battle. I usually tell her like "Do this cuz this boss is weak at point X", as long as it's not 'what if'! XD 'What if' question is only used during evaluation, I should say ^^; woo... 5 hrs to defeat Yiazmat... that's nuts. Is that like super secret boss in FF12? 'What if' questions really takes a lot of my time, especially when I want to try something new. Way better to refer provided notes to start off with ^_^ It's not wrong to follow my own idea, but I mostly get the wrong solution/result after that (hence demotivation -_-) |

It's the final hunt. You have to beat a hidden boss first that's got 6,000,000hp. Then you go fight the dude in a colosseum, he's freakin huge and keeps spamming death spells at your party. I can understand demotivation (4 tbs of hot sauce) but maybe that's one of the reasons people use what ifs. They keep saying what if just so as they don't do something. ![]() |

"What if.." to me is the greatest thing happen in human mind.. that's what we have the ability to think, eventhough the questions would be really silly .. it's because of the existence of "What if.." we got luxuries and all around.. i mean "what if.." is the greatest thing that the dictionary(language) would have.. they are simple-word(if) yet they give biggest occurence in this world.. There's and 'if',and there's possibilities for humankind to overpower everything and even the will.. The 'if' is like a possesion of power.. an unpredictable power that would let you to change the world and yourself.. people might said 'impossible' Like what 'if' i want to change the past..it would be 'impossible' but once i remember somebody said Einstein had discover a theory of 'dimension' thing.. and i was thinking.. 'What if' questions.. scientists form because of 'what if'.. well..'what if scientists really try to crack their minds and then try to find out what theory and make out dimensions and all those illogical stuff' ' we could go to the past and change it..' yes it might sound silly..just like people would laugh at me and say.. "you are such a dreamer" but i always believe.. "remember the times when people keep on laughing those -what if- thinkers and said what their doings are only impossible and people keep on laughing them for doing 'useless' things, but look at what 'if' their mind questions things had bring us"- TV..computer..internet..camera.. everything is because of 'if'.. maybe one day..we could create a dimension to live.. maybe one day.. these whole 'what if' thing is beginning to create something illustral to realistic.. |

By that argument it is also the worst thing to happen. My main argument would be, what if I smash these two atoms together? Whumpf, hiroshima's a dead zone for ages to come. What if I accelerate this nuclear missile this much? Oh dear, the threat of launching ICBMs (thus a cold war). What if I expose this virus to this and oh look I've generated a super virus. Hell, if you want to look at it real simple look at this one. What happens if you mix bleach and chlorine together? Answer: you get mustard gas. Singularly one of the biggest blunders of WW1. I won't disagree and say we didn't have many great things from such what if minds, but we have had many flaws as well. Almost totally irrelevant, but look at this: Modern science along with modern medicine grew up hand in hand with modern warfare. Those great minds that enabled our luxuries also created the tools that could seal all our fates. All through those what ifs. What ifs are dangerous because they have no common sense bearing to them. ![]() |
Re: What if?

I must concur, renshi. This seems somewhat related to the scientific method. make observations, have a hypothesis(what-if), test it, make observations, make another hypothesis (ooo.what-if??), experiment, etc. What-if's, like science, are object. learning is not dangerous, it is how we use the knowledge. ![]() |

i think everybody has their opinion.. since this is how they look on perspective.. it's just opinion and express on how it is.. you think it is a danger because you got your reasons to it.. as i..i saw a different perspectives and i think that 'what if' is something that could change the world.. eventhough there's flaws..eventhough there's a limit behind it.. i still think that 'what if' is the greatest thing happen in human's mind.. i mean imagination is what makes human different from other aside from thinking... so it's just an opinion though..no offense.. thank you >.<~ |

Offense should never be taken from an opinion. I can see where your coming from Raystorm, the point I was making is that in order to have the full knowledge of a what if, you need the conclusion. Like saying what if we mix powder a with powder b to make powder c? To fully understand it, you would have to test the properties of powder c and as such, wouldn't have a full idea of the outcome because you can't totally predict the changes that occur between a and b whilst making c. However, it has become scientific, a bit too much for me in the morning. And, I have to say, that without those what ifs, we wouldn't have our built in natural fears of certain animals (usually the ones that can eat us) and we wouldn't know about the dangers of certain foods. So I have to say it has been useful, but I suppose it's just a sign of the shift in times. It's gone from being a survival trait to a tool for manslaughter and profit. ![]() |

plese excuse me for this but "what if"wedidnt have "what if" questions most if not all science would be lost cause it all started with someone saying what if. |
