Need help with Japanese Grammar: -beki desu/ -hazu
Link | by 遥かレイ on 2005-05-14 19:41:01
I don't think anyone will respond to this tread but I nead help with Japanese grammar.
Does anyone know the difference between -beki desu and -hazu? I know both mean "should" but what is the difference?
For example will it make a difference whether I say taberu-beki desu or taberu-hazu?
When should you use -beki desu and when should you use -hazu?

Also, should I bother with learning the transitive and intransitive forms of verbs.(For example okiru/okosu to get up/to rouse)

hi harukarei-san,

Eto...i dunno if this will at least help you a little, but, here goes:

べき - should (suf to verbs) / must

Should/Must はず - Hazu shows an expectation that something should happen. In other words, you are pretty sure something is true. Let`s see how it works...

To add はず to any adjective just add it...
そのかばんは、高いはずです。
sono kaban wa, takai hazu desu.
That bag must be expensive.
[It is expected to be expensive]

Just add it to the simple form of any verb
あなたは、ゴジラを知っているはずです。
anata wa, gojira o shitteiru hazu desu.
You should/must know Godzilla.

There are 2 types of adjectives:

-i adjectives - adjectives that end in -i
-na adjectives - adjectives that add -na when placed before nouns

The -i adjectives change:

あつい atsui - (It's) hot || +i
あつくない atsukunai - not hot || -i + kunai
あつかった atsukatta - was hot || -i + katta
あつくなかった atsukunakatta - wasn't hot || -i + kunakatta

Learn this and you can use all -i adjectives!

The -na adjectives don't change, but when placed before nouns they add a -na

げんき genki (healthy, active, fine) げんきな子 genki na ko (healthy child)

it has been explained to me that はず is something that is said to be, or supposed to be.

どうも ありがとう ございます!
The はず/べき thing has been confusing me for the longest time.
