Japanese Police Work
Link | by Kiyoshi-kun on 2007-12-11 06:55:45
I'm currently striving for a career as an officer or a detective in Japan but am unable to find any info on the subject (i.e, How much they make, what education is needed, if jobs are available and where, etc, etc, etc.) If anyone would be kind enough to either give me a site I could use to find out more on this subject or if anyone has any information in general, I would be very appreciative. I'm an American and am currently learning Japanese if that means anything. Thanks again. ^^

OK, listen closely:
Japan has a police force that is capable of maintaining exceptional order in the country. It has a really high arrest ratio. Policemen or patrolmen in the Japanese police are called "omawarisan". They usually patrol the streets on their white bicycles or motorbikes.
Now the pay of a patrolman would probably be pretty high, since it is they who are on the ground. Another suitable alternative is to work in a police box or "hashutsujo". Unlike the name, a police box is actually an office located in various parts of the city. There policemen handle stuff like lost & found objects, and handling major criminal cases. Their pay isn't exactly very high, but that's because the risk is lower.
Hope this is enough for now. If I think of something else, I'll let you know.
Good luck!

You might want to find a person to job shadow or send emails back and forth with to learn more, but... I heard that 99% of people accused of crimes are sent to jail. XD.

That's right: Japan has a very high arrest rate.
