I heard that just a little while ago that whale was added back to the menus of school cafeterias in japan. They students described it as tasting more of pork than chicken. Im wondering what kinda whales these are because last time I checked most whales are illegal to be caught in most regions of the world. If its doplhin im okay though, I know they're not whales!!!!!!!!! |

Okay this is coming from the BBC. Whales (humpbacks and minke whales, maybe others) are being added to school menus in Wakayama. They claim it is to educate their children about their tradition of whaling in the past. Japan is allowed to kill 400 or so whales for "scientific purposes". Conservationists like Greenpeace want to stop them. Not many Japanese people eat or even like whale, so I don't think the whales are going to be disappearing off the planet any time soon. |

no humpbacks. Even Japan will not hunt endangered whales. Minke whales on the other hand are not an endangered species and make up the bulk of the whaling catch. The others are usually Sperm whales and Bryde's whales. Whale is also a regional specialty, it's not in all of Japan and many still oppose eating it for conservation reasons, though many remember eating whale during rationing after WW2 when there was no other protein source available. |

The article I read clearly stated humpbacks were being caught as well. I believe humpbacks are vunerable not endangered (not really sure). Maybe they were wrong. |
