Japan - IS there Xenophobia in it?
Link | by Freedom-Justice on 2005-05-29 03:55:47
I'm wondering about this one, since i don't see many gaijins working there. If a person knows japanese and it's culture , and wishes to live there to work and to marry in japan, with japanese people, are japanese open minded on this, or are they Xenophobic? I live in europe and i know some countries like France , and Germany still have some problems with Xenophobia, but what about japan?

I'm asking this cuz i really would like to live&work there...and u knows, marry as well.

Xenophobia means the fear of aliens. In Japan, not many people are Xenophobia. However, the Japanese people on the whole are prejudice against foreigners. This is to say that they have a bias that prevents objective consideration of foreigners. That is why they will laugh 10 times harder if you have PERFECT pronunciation, than if you have good pronunciation. To the Japanese, an American speaking in sophisticated Japanese is funny for the same reason it would be funny to see a Chimpanzee using a toilet and reading a newspaper. How delightfully unexpected! The savage ape thinks its people. Tee-hee-hee!

It is possible for a gaijin to live and work and marry in Japan, but never to become truly Japanese. It is not fair at all; I have met a few gaijin who know more about the Japanese culture and history than many Japanese citizens, yet they are still gaijin. If you don't mind being a gaijin for the rest of your natural life, go to Japan and have a good time! I hope you do not go with expectations of begin fully accepted, because you will not, unless you look asian.

I wasnt hoping to become a nihonjin in racial terms, but in paper(nationality). But if they treat a person differently just because he is a foreigner, that's something really sad.

racist? no, i dont think so.

i said that they are prejudice, and clearly defined that as bias that prevents objective consideration. what i feel to be an accurate definition or racism is people who think they are ratially superior, and often use this as the basis for moral decisions.

prejudice is a reasonable and understandable survival strategy, no to say that it is always "good" or "bad". racism, on the other hand, clearly "bad".

the japanese people, on a whole, are very wise and humble people. it would be rare in this day and age to find a japanese citizen who would claim japanese people are racially superior than foreigners.

as far as the legal system, "on paper" it works a lot like it does in america. you can get a work visa. you can marry a japanese citizen and get joint citizenship. you can get the same company bonus if you work hard.
