Another mysterious problem...

Nice one, another mysterious problem about my PC. Sorry for troubling but I do not have much knowledge about computers and stuff, more if it is about components, installing, uninstalling, etc., etc. now, I'll be asking two questions regarding my computer. Surely, this is one troublesome computer, and I am one troublesome person. First Problem: My paint vanished. Yeah, vanished into thin air. I cannot find it anywhere. I SEARCHed it, RUN it, and even searched the Internet on for my problem, but I cannot find an answer. I searched it on "Windows/system" (yeah, I cannot somehow find "system32", so I thought this would do), but it doesn't have anything inside the folder. I tried to re-install it by the "Add/Remove Hardware" but still no hope. Can you please, someone, help me through this thing???? How can I retrieve it?????? Second Problem: okay, since I have my first problem, I cannot post any pictures here about my second problem. My second problem is my Hard Disk Space. Yeah, DISK SPACE. It's running low. No, it's not that I have too many files, applications, or hardwares installed, I don't know either why. And that's my problem and my question: Why it is like that and how I can get rid of it. Well, I had already deleted some of my games, just like one of my Online games that took almost 1 GB of the computer. (Hey, got no choice: I cannot patch it now since I have no more Disk Space, so I need to delete it. T_T) I also deleted many saved articles and projects (yeah, they are not that important anymore and they are on my USB, that's why my USB is now almost full. It was like a storehouse of my computer). I'm using the "Disk Cleanup" thingy of the computer, but no use. For this moment, (yeah, I mean while I'm typing this) I have 0 bytes of Disk Space. (I am not kidding, it is really 0 bytes) If I close this browser of mine (Google Chrome), it would be at least have 2 or 3 MB of space, but that's really nothing if you compare it to what I needed. Well, this problem doesn't really "always" occur. Sometimes, when I open my computer, it would have at least 40 MB of Disk Space. Yeah, "40 MB". But once you are playing or using the computer for about 2 to 3 hours, it would go back to 0 bytes, and...ta-da! I have my problem again[!!!]. My computer is not slow or anything, it is just that my Disk Space is running low, and it goes low even if I do not install anything. Please, can someone help me with this????? Oh yeah, I also have tried to delete my "History" in Google Chrome. This gave me at least 157 MB of Disk Space, and I managed to use the Disk Cleanup thingy which made the Disk Space 170 MB. Well, that's my happy day, but it went down after 25 hours. Yeah, it came back to 0 bytes. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR THOSE WHO WILL TRY TO HELP ME, AND THANKS FOR THOSE WHO WILL HAVE A HARD TIME READING MY PROBLEM BUT CANNOT HELP ME. I'LL BE REALLY THANKFUL!!! P.S.: I will try to gather much information on how to fix this thing before I do it. So I'll not be able to do the solutions users here would be saying here, but I'll gather it and will take a serious plan on which is to try, and which would be the easiest for me, for I am not that knowledgeable in computer. :)) |

Long story short, you have a virus. I don't know much about viruses, so I can't help you there. Try bringing it to a computer center or something and ask them to help? |

Sound like some sorta malware ._. Sorry, I can't help much. D: Have you tried displaying hidden files and such. |
Re: Another mysterious problem...
|
@ Chiny: Ah...well, that's okay. I had tried to open hidden files, but it was still the same. Thanks @xsora: ah, I see. Well, that was also my first thought, but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks. Thanks to the two of you. |
Re: Another mysterious problem...

As Aoi said, you have a virus. If you have a good anti-virus/anti-malware program, try scanning your hard drive. It should tell you immediately there's more than one there. Another thing is back up anything on your hard drive to something else, then format the entire thing, that way you can try to figure out what actually happened. Usually this is the case of more than one Trojan Horse. My question to you is: What did you download and what site did you go on? |

try formatting your Hard Disk Drive, or try using some decent antivirus program like ESET NOD32 or Kaspersky or Norton to scan your Hard Disk, or... If theres no other way, bring it to a repairman |

If nothing else is working, then before reformatting, try this. Force shut down by holding power button ---> start in safe mode ---> system restore to farthest back date possible ---> run your antivirus to make sure virus is gone. |

@Naru: I see...I had many of my files on my USB. Well, back at 2010 about August or July, I downloaded an Emulator for PS1. However, I cannot remember the site of it. I also downloaded games for it, www.emuparadise.org/roms/psx/. @Chiny: :DD yeah, me too. I hate viruses also. @LnDn: yeah, I think that's the best way: format it. But I want another way except formatting. This computer of mine has been formatted for almost 3 times already, so I wanted to do a different way this time. I'll also try to use that decent antivirus you had said. Thanks. @Haseo: Okay, I have one problem: no antivirus. Yeah, I've got a CD of it, but because of the Disk Space, I cannot install it anymore. (When I reformatted it, the guy there said there's no use of the antivirus, so he didn't installed it.) and now, I want to but there's no more space anymore. Too bad. But once I've got an opportunity to install the antivirus, I'll try to do what you said. Thanks. |

Then you'll have to install the antivirus AFTER you do what I said, otherwise, the virus won't let you. |
Re: Another mysterious problem...

Ah, I see. Okay, thanks then. I'll try to do it. Thanks. |

Jesus, how large is your PC? Or how much HD space does it originally store? 300GBs? Having 40MBs left of space is nothing. It seems to me you need an external HD (or better yet, a Mac ^_^). But seriously, it seems you don't have one or else you wouldn't have this issue of course. I know all about this issue since I used to have disk space issues on my former PC. I stored everything I dLed onto it, and I think it had 320GBs originally and I eventually bought a nice 1TB External HD. They're cool and really not that expensive these days. You can even get a 500MB external HD (more like a giant USB drive) for like 60-70$. Now you said you lost paint, as in that crummy default microsoft joke of a photo editing software? Leave it, cause it sucks. So many people have even torrented CS2, although I had it and eventually now on my Mac I have CS4 master suite collection, don't bother with Paint. There's always been Gimp which is free, but torrenting it isn't bad either (Photoshop). Now your main issue is that one, you're using a PC, and two, you're using a PC WITHOUT any protection... Very dangerous. The guy said you didn't need to re-install it, he clearly doesn't no anything or must've been high on the job. What OS are you running? My guess maybe Windows XP? Which is by far the worst OS from Microsft. Insane amount of bugs, malware, spam, bs, viruses, you name it... Windows XP has them all. Vista isn't that cozy either. Two things, upgrade your OS to at least 7 and get an anti-virus program! There are a few free ones out there, but meh, they don't "totally" get the job done. Or you can be smart, spend a bit of money for an iMac (if you wanna game) or at least a Macbook with maybe 2 extra GBs of RAM. To be honest, and I've seen and said this before. People complain about Macs, oh they're so expensive, blah blah blah. Well you never have to use any yearly anti-virus program, save like 50$ for 'x' years, the OS is user friendly (but also has its rare issues here and there, which is normal), and Macs are just downright sexier and better. I've had my Macbook for maybe two years now or so? But I'm itching for a major upgrade. I wish I had more RAm installed at least. The one real, or at least a few flaw with Macs is that windows OS programs don't usually get upped to Mac which makes it frustrating. Cause I can't use my printer cause Lexmark doesn't want to release drives for Snow Leopard... -_____-" So I gotta use my sisters W7 laptop. I also hate mounting files on Mac. Doraemon mounted it into one large file easily and smoothly. But no DMG for it. :( Okay so minus my rant, basically you need to either restore to an earlier point before the major virus occured, install your anti-virus if you still have it, do a full system sweep, quarantine all results, and look to either purchase an external HD and move your larger files onto there (anime, movies, etc.) or take the full leap to Macworld. :) ------- |

To Lord of Lightning. 1. I don't know how did Paint disappear. But I think it might be corrupted by a virus or something. But to be sure if it's manually deleted or corrupt, let's recover your paint in those following instructions. a. Ready your Windows Operating System Installation Disk, the current version that is installed in your PC. b. In your Windows OS, click START -> CONTROL PANNEL -> ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS. c. In Add Or Remove Program Window, Choose ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS. d. In your Windows Components Wizard, highlight Accessories and Utilities (this must have a CHECK MARK), then click DETAILS. e. Highlight Accessories (must have also CHECK MARK), and then click DETAILS. f. In those section, you can now see if your PAINT have a check mark or not. If not, check it. This will reinstall your paint. But sometimes before or after the installation, an error is poping out due to those problems that you said a while ago (example: No Hard Disk Space, Corrupted DLL, the Paint is missing in the Accessories List, No Icon of Paint, etc). But if you can install it freely without errors, try to test and run it after the installation. I'm saying this to answer only your question in number 1 for reference, but this is not good to resolve your System Problem. 2. There is a worm that can fills hard disk with unknown files, I think its a same signature of Disk Filler. This acts like corrupting your hard disk physical drives or boot sector (0) by filling with files with massive bytes that can't be normally seen in your Windows Operating System (if it infect the physical partition of your hard disk, you can try running a Linux on a Live Disk so you can see those things). You can't counter a worm/virus until you destroy its root. Virus can be terminated easily by using an Anti-virus, but the infection of a Worm is much more horrifying than a Virus because if your system is infected, the whole system and proccess will infected too, inclusing the scanning of your Anti-Virus, drivers of all your hardwares, performance of your hardwares, etc. I've been collecting viruses and worms for my study on how to deal with them, but the worm that I said, Nimda, and Morris are the worst cases for me, I can't even touch them because of its risk. The only thing you can do is to format your PC and install a fresh. So, pack-up your important files and format your PC. If you want to secure your PC againts virus, Anti-Virus/Malwares/Spywares are the best solution. But I will include DEEPFREEZE as your additional tool. This allows system administrators, like me, to protect the core operating system and configuration files on a workstation or server by restoring a computer back to its original configuration each time the computer restarts. You can study it by researching its function to the internet. Setup your PC with DeepFreeze are the following. 1. Before installation, reset your CMOS by removing the battery of your motherboard's clock and returning it for 10 seconds (Some Motherboard's CMOS resets by removing the clock for 5 seconds, but to be sure, I recommend 10 seconds). There is a purpose in doing this while repairing/installing your virus/worm infected PC. After that, set your CMOS Setup to what configuration you need. 2. Make 2 or 3 partitions. 1 for the OS, and one or two partition to put your files and other programs. I have 5GB for Drive C: or the partition where I install my WindowsXP OS. If you plan to install Win7 or any OS, the Disk Space of the C: Partition = (Minimum Required Space for the OS) + (The Needed Capacity for Drivers and Important Programs) + (2GB Hard Disk Space). So if Win7 32Bit need a minimum of 16GB, add a 10GB for AV, Office, Dev't and Editing Tools, etc, and a 2GB Free Space. You can install your games and other recreational programs on the other partition. The next Partition capacity is up to you. Then install your OS, hardware drivers, AntiVirus, and important software/programs. Then configure your OS that suits your needs, but be careful on misconfigurations and other error behavious. If you want to redirect/reconfigure the link of your My Documents to D: or to other partition, try study Windows Tweaking Procedures. PS: I advise you to stick on Windows XP because Vista is a terrible OS, but Win7 is OK for me due to some other instances which regards on Photoshop editing and online gaming. 3. After that, install DeepFreeze and Froze your C: where your OS was installed. Don't put your other partition to frozen state because you will not be able to retrieve your saved files in there after your PC restart. In those setup, your OS is secure from file corruption, unnoticed patch, mis-settings and misconfigurations, and other malware/virus infections after you restart your system (but I didn't test this settings on worms ^_^), but be sure to thawed it and update your antivirus for the security and safety of your files saved in other partition. I hope this will help you in your problems and solutions to your uneasiness to format again your PC from another systems misbehaviors. |

@devils-angel: It is sure to me that it is of about 40 GB or so. Thanks for the price of external but I am in Philippines (yeah, and it is supposed to be Php, and I know once you convert $60 to Php, you don't have to imagine the price)^^ But since you said it, I'll try to look for it on my country. Thanks. @Ruy Lopez: Hmm...thanks for the Paint. So worms are different from viruses? Surely, I don't have much knowledge about them. But I do know that Viruses causes computer to malfunction and such, but I don't know any more information about them. It looks like that last option really is to format the PC, eh? Thanks.{Edit}: yeah, I heard Vista was a horrible OS. I just don't know why, but they say that it is slow, whatsoever. That's why, as much as possible, I don't want to get Vista, even if it is the one recommended by one of my friends that used to fix our computer. (He is not that knowledgeable in new OS's, computers, or programs) Thanks to the both of you. I really appreciate it. |

Has the problem been resolved? |
Re: Another mysterious problem...

Nope, not yet. Until I got the easiest method of solving this, I would love to have more solutions. But if ever I cannot get anymore, I'll try to at least see the most easiest way that the others had recommended me to do. |
