Definitely not a Rubik's cube

You're right, it doesn't simulate a Rubik's cube exactly.
It was easier to program this way, especially with the letters on the squares.
Cool 3-D though, huh?

I'm not sure if this is in the nature of the puzzle, but I found that you don't actually have to solve the puzzle entirely to get the answer. In fact, it's almost solvable by inspection after hitting the reset a couple of times.

What language was this done in? The 3D-ness kinda reminds me of a "Hello World" type program for OpenGL.

Yeah, refreshing over and over makes it quite easy.
It's fun to try and solve it normally, though!
I used the built-in 3D library available at Processing.org.
