really and truly anime is not the best way to learn Japanese. they don't speak like a normal Japanese would. Most characters use a ...familliar/rude way of speaking... i guess i would say. watching Dramas are better. the speech is more realistic. Oh and don't forget if you do learn japanese from these shows girls should pay attention to how the girls speak and the boys and how the boys speak. Girls can just barly get away with the boys speech but boys will sound like transvestites and that is not really good.

i watched about 30 anime episodes to learn basic japanese.. but that really isnt the way to fully understand it. it's better to read a self-teaching book (thats what i did). or even better is to take classes (if you can find some, lol) ^-^

Uh don't do that...bad idea. It's better to learn it from a good source 'cause sometimes fansubbing does fail.

Actually, the question must be 'How much attention does it take to learn Japanese?' I mean, I used to have this How-to-speak-Japanese CD, and I watch loads of animes. But later on, I found it boring and left it at that.

it doesnt matter how many anime you watch but what anime you watch.find anime whose theme songs have subtitles and from there, you can learn to write some simple katakana or hiragana. i did that and it worked like wonders ^^

Classes to help you get grammar, anime for vocabulary. Classes will also provide you a chance to hear REAL people speak and to get comments about your own command of the language.

Watching anime can help you learn japanese. but taking class to know the other extra is also important.. coz there is different in speaking formal and informal..

there a top guy in japanese class, which im also take japanese.. he could not stop braggin.. this is his line "Im better than you in japanese that because i watch anime"

but i prefer watching the japanese drama instead..

coz i know a friend who cant speak mandarin (taking this as a story)
watch many taiwanese drama, after 4 month she was speaking fluent mando.

So watching japanese drama is more worth it ^^

That's the thing I want to ask myself too. I really want to learn japanese and all and had started to learn a little basic japanese. I had watched for about 10-15 anime subbed. I would prefer you to take classes or ask a friend to teach you[just like what I did. I learned some from him].

I really hate to say this but just watching subbed anime cannot really teach us to speak/learn japanese. Although it can help to spread our minds to japanese culture and of course, we still can learn a little from it.

After all, sometimes anime sub's subtitles aren't really accurate. Sometimes, what are in the subs are not complete. An example is 'arigatougosaimasu'[sorry if the spelling is wrong. I still cannot write romaji that much.] will be just 'thanks' in the sub instead of 'thankyou very much.'

But for me, learning one certain language isn't just in watching with that kind of language [example is japanese with englisg sub] but is to work hard and swear to yourself that 'I'll learn ________ whatever it takes![the blank is the language you want to learn] But this is an exception with the english language since english is meant to be taught in schools and in the first time a person is born.

But even when you watch something that had its kind of language,[example is japanese with english sub] the movie you are watching must be the one you love to watch. Just watching to learn japanese gets you bored easily and give up on learning that language.

You can also learn japanese by musics.[Like the one in gendou.com, this site.] Try reading the romaji [or kanji] lyrics and try determining what that word means. [Unfortunately, in order to do this, you must kknow some japanese yet so the english lyrics will not be mixed up.]

But it's recommended that you just take classes. It would make yourself more into japanese. After classes are done, watch anime and see if you had learned something. [Still through anime since this thread's title had anime]

This is just a suggestion. But what I usually do is watching subbed anime.

I don't watch anime to Japanese. I started takiing classes before I watch anime in Japanese. Many people think it's a good idea, but for me, it isn't, some fansubs may have mistakes.

My friend from Denmark (same age as I am) learned Japanese by watching anime for 3 years (or less than that). But I like the idea that he wrote down Japanese words, then review it afterwards.

みんなさん、がんばります。 私もがんばりますよ。 今、日本語勉強をしっています。でも、10月、日本に行きます。

to learn japanese without taking classes, i think anime is a sketchy way to go about it... i mean you entirely miss the whole polite/status part of the language (which, without knowing, you could probably embarass yourself or get into trouble). For example, if you were a male (in japan) talking to your boss about serious matters, you probably shouldn't talk the same way as a 10 year old female talking to her friends >_>

I think using anime (and j-music) to boost vocabulary is a good way to go. Pay special attention to translator notes and compare translations for words you hear in multiple series. Then, when you think you know the definition, double-check using a site like eudict or google translate and then write it down (in Romaji and Hira/Kata/Kanj so you can learn the characters as well)

Investing a bit of money into a decent japanese-english dictionary really helps as it provides a reliable translation for words and they generally have grammer tips in the center. Manga that has translation notes also are super-helpful for getting some references and common phrases down

Also when watching anime, don't skip the opening and ending theme songs. A lot of fansubbers will put engligh, roma and kanj for the lyrics. Its a really good way to listen to pronounciation and to associate the characters with the sounds they make!

be warned though that subbing isn't always the best translation... A good example of this would be yu-gi-oh! duel monsters subbed... i mean they couldn't translate the english into english....

At best, anime is good for sharpening your listening skills.
Speaking as a shounen fangirl (shounen meaning rough japanese language for boys) as a young lady, I was not doing myself favours with the natives at all x.x;;

You'll learn stuff, but you'll most definitely use it in the wrong situations, therefore embarressing yourself and the natives as well.
Best way to learn = go to school/take an official course.
Or if you wanna self study online, then learn grammar and vocab and kanji appropriately.

As for listening practice, definitely use more media outside of anime.
Hop on FNN (Fuji news network), or even NHK's basic Japanese lessons (http://www.nhk.or.jp/lesson/english/index.html), watch news and you'll be surprised at how much you don't know
(formal japanese but still good to be aware of it)
Watch any variety show on youtube, chances are that they're speaking western Japanese dialect (kansai ben) but that speed and sentence structure would be close to daily conversation between friends in a casual setting.

The best perhaps is to do what the Asians do, and that is to follow japanese dramas.
Those have the most natural command of Japanese, their accents are clear and depending on the drama, the level can be difficult or light. :)

But as for anime, it'll only get you so far and that depends if you're into moe, shounen or mecha, too :/

Excellent points mystique. True anime doesn't teach you proper anime. But really Only things my friends pocked up was damn it, and sh*t. They don't care what "ohaiyo" or "oyasumi" means.

darkness is the vail that holds the truth. open your eyes and let the true world be seen, if you dare think you can handle it. i am the darkness within your heart. i know what you fear, and what you really are. --Myself--

If you dwell at the reality side of this world, Anime doesn't really teach you real Japanese.

Man, native speakers speaks very different from those voice actings.
You'll find it surprising that you can't understand a thing they say compared to your japanese listening skill at anime.
They use different words than what you are actually used to on anime.

BUT it helps you learn Japanese.
After stepping the stone, radio and reality tv shows are the good next steps.
So continue watching anime x.x

A LOT and you'll never learn to speak it as well as you could if you were to take formal classes. Anime is good for improving your language skill but it won't help you master the language. Something better-at least to start out-is children's programs, things similar to Sesame Street, for example. Programs that are made with young children as there target audience tend to use simple language and will help a person to learn proper use of the language. This actually helps with any language. I watch the Spanish version of Sesame Street once in a while when I was learning Spanish and it was very helpful because the speech is very clear and the speak slowly both of which are a giant help with learning pronunciation. This is a much better route to go with especially if you want to get the accent as close as possible.

EDIT: If you do take classes (in any foreign language) native speakers are ALWAYS going to the best people to learn from that for example learning Japanese from an American who learned Japanese from someone else.

I don't nessasaraly "learn" from it but I always Find my self talking along with the characters. Yes, its creepy but
It has kept me flewent with speech the past 5 years.

Cons: if the character(s) have weird accents or regional wordings, I some times pick those up and
Some how use it in usual conversations creating an akward atmosphere .
