As long as u know chinese u will be able to pick up japanese alot quicker cos u already know the meaning of most the kanji... and from there on its basically just remebering the sounds made by the hirigana and katakana and the structure...

Well as an anime heiress, I say that anyone can learn Japanese if they are willing to put in the work. I live in America though, and I am not willing to work. ^_^

Aw, don't put yourself down! What's wrong with being 13? It's never too early or late to learn a new language.... or four. Hmm, I started learning Chinese when I was very little, then at 6 I started learning Japanese. At 12 I started both English and French, and now I'm 16 and I know four languages. And I have a bad memory. So if I can do it, so can you. Of course, I didn't start all four languages at the same time. My advice to you would be to learn them one at a time. Two at the same time was terrible for me. Oh, and don't depend much on watching Japanese anime. A lot of anime girls with squeaky voices talk in this really cute/sweet but weird way that we don't use in real life. Example? Sentences that end with "~ nano yo" or "~ dawa". It'd be really creepy if you use that in real life. Best of luck! |

Don't worry! I'm also 13 and trying to learn both chinese and japanese. It'll take some time, but you'll get it (An maybe I will too!)

Haha... same here... I'm learning Japanese too... I just don't do well in Chinese though -.-" *AND IT'S MY MOTHER TONGUE!!!* Arg!! Oh well... it may be hard to cope with lots of languages, but it may turn out useful ;). So then, good luck :D

Chinese is kinda easy for me, cuz im chinese>.<... well i went to chinese school when i was little (6) till third grade....then...i stopped..too much school work..so i started watching more chinese t.v. shows...and then later on, i read entertainemnt section of newspapers..i kinda stop..cuz i wanted to improve on my english so i started reading stories online... some chiense words have two meanings..for example (i thought of this on top of my head) chicken also means prostitute...(in canto) and some chiense words look liek the same thing...but the bases are different..so sometimes u can tell wat it means if u noe the bases.. for example: bowl would be wuen (in canto)...if u take out the rock (sak) base and stick a girl (nu) base in it..it would be yuen (in canto) I speak +read fluently in chinese I've been learning spanish for 4 years..well my mom kinda taught me a little when i was six...i have relatives in panama..not blood related ones... i learn viet through forums..and some net friends taught me through yahoo instant messenger..and i learn korean from dramas..and japanese from dramas, dictionary, anime...its just for fun at the moment.. |

great! guess what, i'm a half chinese half japanese lolz. haha. and i can't speak both languages fluently... well, at least i can speak japanese quite okay but chinese... i really can't =P well, now, i'm trying to learn cantonese and mandarin ^ ^ haha.

I have a classmate that is a half Japanese and Chinese... but she does not speak Japanese at all... she hardly recognises hiragana, and she is pretty weak in her Chinese... but her English is something to be fearful of... :?

well even though im chinese id say that chinese is harder than japanese beacuse, like my teacher said that the japanese only had like 8000 in its alphabet while the chinese had like 50000. i dunno if its true or not, but hey, at least it came from a teacher.

Hoiishh...age is no matter. 13 is still young. As you get to spend most of your time on learning chinese, and i think japanese language is slightly changes our way of speaking in chinese. Alot of people in Japan luv to speak kanji, and i even been to Tokyo before. XD luckily my uncle know Japanese, which i get to learn some. Yet most Japanese people's looks not matter, what matter most is cute-ness and i often see alot of naked girls in house Xp. As in they find themselves has nothing wrong about being naked. I must say they're way too open-minded, more like american way of living in house. Well i still like drawing anime and i get to learn drawing in one of my uncle's studio in Kotahda.

oioioi... It doesn't matter... Listen, my grandpa is chinese and my grandma is Indonesian and she's an ex-mandarin teacher... But I myself have a hard time learning chinese (in fact, I kinda dislike it and had three zeros in five test, black_ifrit has the same too...) But Japanese is fun! Really fun! I've no trouble learning Japanese than Chinese! BTW... OI!!! bblack_ifrit!!! Lu mo mati,ya?! Skarang siapa yang cupu "H"?! Ada juga gwa yang ngomong gitu!!!  |

I used to think Cantonese was hard >.<...and it was my mother tongue as well..but I think if you watch more chinese dramas and read the subs you can get better and now I'm soooo good at it....hehe ^.^ I've just started watching Japanese animes with subs...at first I thought it was hard but now...I know a few japanese words!!..Sooo happy about it ^.^

Don't have a clue about cantonese, i understand about 75% of what they say in the chinese dramas, but i cann't speak it or read it.

There's no reason you couldn't. I'm English, and I can speak English, French, German and a lot of Japanese, I'm learning Spanish, and I want to learn Chinese. So I will start Chinese in about a year. At thirteen I knew French and German, so it's not a problem to learn many languages at a young age - in fact it is much better. Japanese is by far the easier of the two languages. | Chinese is harder to learn (one of the hardest languages to learn actually), but it would help A LOT when you learn Kanji in Japanese. Thats about where the similarities end. I say you familiarize yourself with some basic chinese characters first, then tackle Japanese since its easier. Thats just my opinion though. I've never tried learning both at the same time |
